SPS that can grow into each other without killing each other?

right, the only acros I have that will fend off an encroaching monti is my millies--they throw out their white stringies and turn the monti white, but the monti's strong point is its growth rate. On the other hand I see top down pics of montis growing around some acros and wonder how in the world that happened.

I see tanks like mpoletti's, 250g, etc and lots of the zeo based tanks and see huge tangles of gorgeous coral. Do you all prune or let nature take its coarse?

Every time I try this, the less appealing coral wins!!!

I have a lot of sps growing in without any problem. When they first touch it can cause die off but after a few weeks they 'settle in' together. LPS touching SPS is a very different matter.

So you are suggesting that when acros first touch, do not panic and they will eventually build up a sort of tolerance to each other and resume growing? I find this interesting as I have planted my frags pretty tightly and was anticipating having to do a lot of pruning to avoid conflict. If I can just let them work it out on their own knowing they will likely be ok that would be reassuring.

I have orange and purple monti digitata growing into eachother just fine. I've noticed my green digitata can't grow right up against the orange and purple, though, without a narrow die off line between them.

Great thread-btw. I'd love to hear about some acros that can grow right up against eachother.

my cali tort, has touched my birds for more then a week and so has my tri color with no problems . I don't like seeing them touch so i frag whenever I can but nothing has ever died

Seems like birds nests are able to coexist pretty peacefully...I've had mine touching a yellow pocillapora with no problems.

Funny you mention acros growing into a birdsnest (I'm assuming that birds meant birdsnest). I've got a nice acropora growing alongside a birdsnest colony. The acropora has grown into any branch of the birdsnest that touches it, and kills back the birdsnest while advancing itself along the birdsnest's skeleton. Weird but cool interaction.

In my old tank it was certain doom for one of the corals when they touched.... In my new tank I have a number of corals that are now touching but don't seem to be killing each other just kind of growing together... No idea why the difference.

I let mine do whatever. I have some stylos that seem to have bonded with eachother, stags seem to just intertwine and grow together some monties grow together then some of them overrun everything... it can be fun to watch them take evasive action and try to grow around eachother...

I have yet to see a situation where one does not kill the other. I have some that can get very close and do ok, but eventually one will kill the other by stinging or over growing.
