Squamie turning blue??

Sounds too good to be true.

I bought a nice blue rim squamosa at a LFS that had some faint blue shading to the entire mantle. I was definitley not blue, except for the rim.

Since I changed out my bulbs to 400 watt 20K XM bulbs, the darn thing has really colored up! It is really pretty blue now. My other clams seem the same (mostly crocea and maxima, but one other squamosa).

Now it may be cheating as I also have actinic VHO lighting, but it sure seems like the color has changed over time.

Has anyone had any of their clams "color up" or change color over time and with different lighting?

Thanks!

Nice clam, they will ususally turn blue if you use 20k bulbs in your tank, same thing with yoru corals as well.

Hi.
I "investigated" about Blue Squamies for quite awhile now.
What you have ,will color up more, but will never be the Real blue squamie, like what RC member Acroporas have.
The blue rimmed ones, from Marshalls and from Solomon do color up, and I saw the same results under the same bulbs XM 20KK.
However, very nice clam!

Good info!

It is getting more blue, but it is not like the couple of really blue squamies I have seen posted. it will be fun to watch it as it grows and see what happens over a few years.

teh blue colors on it are usually a sign that the clams are getting plenty of light, they will usually turn brown to attract more light if they are not getting enough, same thing with colorful sps that will get less light then they were used to will turn brown.

Did you get that clam from T&T? I got this one about a year ago. It is a captive raised from ORA. I was hoping it would have more blue as it grew but it hasn't changed since I bought it. Lighting - 250W 10K AB DE. I think I'm about ready to sell it and put a blue carpet anenome in its place.

Sure did! T&T on highway 6. Mine looked exactly like yours when I bought it. I think the lighting is what is making the change occur. My clam is 4-5 inches so I hope the color deepens with size. What size is yours?

It's about 5 inches. I guess it was about 4 when I bought it. It only grew two scutes since I've purchased it. It may not have colored up since I keep it in a shaded portion of the tank (under a shelf), only the front half of the clam is hit by light. Keep me updated on its color change.

Blue squamosa

Hi Overboard
Well thats a nice squamosa clam but like you said its not true blue but still very nice .As far as clams changing color yes i have seen some very noticeable differences like greens turning dark blue in maximas .
PS Heres a pic of my own true blue squamie for all of you to drool over.
Villi_Shark i remember you from Reefland :)
Man i reckon you would of traded your own mother for that squamie in your collection ..:strooper:

Sealover your right you could be very wrong Squamosa clams are very easy to identify with there large flutes on the shells and huge mantles compared to derasa clams.;)

Nice clam. I like the pattern on mine better but yours is a little bigger.

As far as how well they colour up, often they gain colour during the first few months as they are recover the colour they lost during from shipping, but after that they dont change colour much.
