how difficult are they to keep alive....i am buying a 12"+ clam, and i dont want him to die, and have something so large and beautiful die, and have it burn a whole in my wallet!

if you're having success with the maxima, a squamie should be just fine.

Clams larger than 5-6 inches do not ship well due to being so heavy and relatively low water to clam mass ratio. I hope you buy local or have a long guarantee that he stay alive in your tank. Large calms can take weeks to die.
Squamosa, Derasa, and Gigas requires less light but more stability in water chemistry and temperature. Overall, I consider them easy to keep

ok, yeah the person who has it is about an hour and 40, from my house....i am going to put the clam, ina very gull 5 gallon bucket.....at least thats what the plan is....

Rather than a 5 g bucket, I would get a 20 g rubber maid with a lid. Bring salt water to exchange for water in his tank. Also bring a air pump to keep the water well oxygenated. You should be fine if you transport your clam like this. Picture?

oh ok i will try to get something bigger like that.....i am taking all his water....his tank is beign broken down so i dont think he needs to water

Make sure it have a good lid. There will be lots of water in your car if you don't have a good lid

true that i was also thinking about lining it with a plastic bag in the tub.....then maybe doubleing it so that i can close the bag and fit that all in the tub....thus minimal spilage will occur
