squid or cuttle

Check out this little cutie,it was collected in some of the most discusting conditions as an accident while getting feeder shrimp at day light this morning, lots of fun at the low tide mud flats, but it was discustingly cold and dark and muddy.

It went into a tank, sat still for a while than had a go at one of the boxer feeder shrimp in the tank for the lion fish.

At the moment the peppermint shrimps are doing very well now that the algea bacteria combo food for the boxer shrimp has dropped away so they are taking over, they were every where.

The boxer shrimp and them don't get on,so once the boxers numbers drop, the peps are in big numbers,it's the same year after year.well since the late 70s any way.

A little red ocy was caught as well, same as last time, they may fight i don't know they are in the same tank now, lots of hiding spots, the new one escaped through the holes in its container before a pic could be taken.

The pic is before the squid was put into a tank and the video is around 3 hours after it went in.

Is it a squid or cuttle?

cool!

cool!

Its a cutie all right,we see a lot them in the rock pools and this is the first time i have actualy kept one that i didn't use for fish food.

I have read that they are piosonous, that makes no sense, the food i used with them in it,killed nothing!

More confusion.oh well.

I think all cephalopods are venomous, but most aren't considerably dangerous to humans. When they bite, it's sort of like a bee sting. Although you can have an allergic reaction to the venom. Best to stay on the safe side.

Quite right brock,i never trust any thing from the ocaen as to the possiblilty of a toxic bite, sting or what ever.

Because of either the pain of worse.

I once put my fist down on the bottom of the ocean while having a look around a long time ago and the spines of a stone fish went in to my fingers, lucky there was not much flesh between skin and bone on top of my fingers or it may not have been just 3 hours of sever pain.

Though i love the ocean and get out there heaps,i trust nothing in it.

I agree that it's a squid, and if so, you should let it go. Squid aren't at all apt to aquarium life and it will likely die soon.

Its amazing as to what this thing is,i called our marine biologists uni here and looked it up on the net and both areas say its a cuttle.
It doesn't worry me now anyway, its chasing the fish in anothers tank now,it killed one of my little lions.
Its lucky,as in the past i used to use them in the fish food mix.

thanks

thanks

So thats why i used them in fish food before and had no deaths.
I always cleaned them before they went into the blender.

It's good to know whta they are and do,cool.

It's not my prob now anyway,Chris is into weird things to keep.
