Since I am a newby when it comes to clams, and I am contemplating my first clam tank, but have been "a modern reefer" since 1998 (I actually started my first reef tank in 1988-but those were the "old methods"-can anyone say DLS?) , I wanted to share a story and ask anyone if they have had a "squirting clam."
A friend of mine was visiting a LFS with his wife and they were noticing a very nice ponape maxima (approx 12" long, brilliant blue) in one of the tanks. My friend's wife was amused by the fact that as you pass your hand over the tank, the clam would shrink back it's tissue in response to a shadow. We'll she kept doing it, which must have aggrevated the clam so much that it shot a jet of water out of the tank from it's siphon right into her face.
My friend was in the another room talking with the owner when he heard her scream and she preceeded to tell him what happened. The shop owner immediatly moved the clam since he was afraid it would hit one of the MH pendents which did not have a splash screen.
Anyway, I just thought of that story and thought it was amusing!
Anyone else have this happen?
