ORCA President 2007~2008

Hi Everyone !

As everyone knows The Southeastern Reef Conference is just one week away.
Wow... the days are flying by and I can't believe SRC is finally here.

For those of you who have been sitting on the fence waiting until the last minute to decide whether or not to register, come on and sign up ! We are trying to get one final giant push for final registrations over the weekend. So click HERE and register for your seat at SRC and remember to sign up for The ORCA Member Appreciation Party and Luau Poolside with your friends and SRC Speakers !

There's is a last minute program change to our speaker line up. On July 3rd, I received an email from Eric Borneman stating that due to professional and personal reasons he will be unable to attend the conference. In his place James Fatheree, author of "Giant Clams in the Ocean and in the Aquarium", will present on Tridacnid Clams in the Marine Reef Aquarium.

So be sure or register if you haven't done so already. SRC 2007 promises to be one of the most exciting Reef Hobby events of the year.

Don't forget about the SRC Raffle and please be sure to register your coral frags for the SRC Frag Auction on-line prior to the event.

See you all soon,

Matt Kantz
ORCA President

Wow, to be honest, I'm extremely excited about Fatheree being a speaker! Giant Clams is a fantastic subject for those of us who keep them and I'm sure this presentation will be very much appreciated!

If you've never heard Julian Sprung speak, you'll be in for a great treat and since the future of aquarium lighting seems to be pushing towards LED's what better speaker than Sanjay Joshi, considered to be one of the most sought after experts in the field?

Of course, anyone who is taking on a large tank build or dreaming of doing so in the future will appreciate the presentation from Richard Harker. Understanding the dynamics of flow, lighting and all the rest involved in putting together a large system is fascinating, even if one isn't in your immediate future.

As if all the above wasn't enough, there is a fantastic group putting together the frag auction and I know George and Joe will have an awesome tank full of corals for us to choose from! It looks as if some nice, rare pieces will find themselves into some area tanks. I'm looking forward to grabbing one or two myself as I've been keeping an eye on some of the pieces posted!

The ORCA folks' dedication and hard work over the past several months has erupted in an extraordinary lineup of speakers and the raffle prize list is better than some of the bigger conferences, IMO, so your chances of walking away with a super prize is pretty good! At the last SRC I walked away with a very nice chiller as a prize!

If you haven't signed up yet...I'd jump in with the rest of us and come have a great time!

That's really nice of Eric to give you so much time to reschedule...luckily you were on the ball and already had a backup. I seriously think that these actions taken by Borneman are unprofessional, inconsiderate, and really just awful. 11 days to cancel a relatively large speaking engagement is just horrible practice. He's not going to be asked to big events anymore with an attitude like that. Imagine if he did something like this at IMAC or MACNA...he'd be excommunicated from his speaking arrangements forever.

Who else feels that ORCA and SRC should never invite Eric Borneman to our events again? Maybe I'm by myself on this, but that is just unacceptable behavior by such a respected name in reef-caretaking. He was really the one I wanted to hear from...but then again he has not even picked up his findings from the salt study yet alone drawn any conclusions. What a waste of so much data. If it's that much work, send it to a data analyst like myself to draw your conclusions. Don't just set it and forget it.

Well sometimes things come up in life that need to be taken care of, cant blame the guy for that, i still respect the man and always will. No one needs to ban the guy from speaking, people cancel arrangements all the time, its called life.

11 days before an event?? I don't think many people just out of the blue cancel speaking engagements. He just has no quantitative analysis of his data. There is no exceuse for no response for over a month and then cancelling at the last minute with little time to change flight plans(yes, it costs us money to get these people here), hotel arrangements and not to mention replacement speakers.

Let me just say we are lucky to have Matt working on this because he is the one who set up a backup speaker. We must also thank James Fatheree for taking his place.

You have obviously never had a speaking engagement. People do not just cancel them "all the time". This is a year-long project that our club and many of the members have been working hard to get right. Again, if this happened to MACNA, although it would be less dramatic to the schedule(as they have a lot more to work with), it would be considered unacceptable by the hundreds of people who purchased their tickets well in advance to see the speakers there. A month ago, it would be okay. But to get no response for this amount of time and then to get the response of, "sorry, can't make it," is not right. I loved hearing him speak at the first SRC and was excited to hear him again. Now, I really couldn't care less about his studies or books or analysis he may never get to studying(he hinted to this on MD forum). I've just seen him losing his idyllic stature amongst reef-caretakers as of late.

But on the bright side, everyone else is making it and I can't wait to hear Mr. Fatheree speak. Julian Sprung should be an entertaining speaker also. I just can't wait...It's going to be so awesome.

Well to be honest, my family has thrown many speaking engagements far bigger than reefkeeping ones, one of my dad's partners is Joe Lewis and the both of them know people that cancel on them all the time due to family reasons such as deaths in the family or just plain old family stuff and business stuff. I am only 18 but i think i know a bit about the business world and know about what goes on in the business world so to say "You have obviously never had a speaking engagement." is not really accurate. People do cancel all the time in the real world. But anyways i am looking forward to this event and hope it will be fun.

I'm really going for Sanjay anyways...the LED topic is one of great importance to me.

Agreed! Sanjay is tops!
I really think LED technology is the way of the future. I know we are using it like crazy in the entertainment lighting industry.

But that said, the rest of the speakers ain't nothin to sneeze at!
This is really going to be a great conference!

Fat Albert (our beautiful Naso THANK YOU Maryce!!) will only eat Julian Sprungs Purple Veggies.
I want to ask him what's his secret ingredient that addicted my fish....

Lol...Fat Albert and just about any other algae eaters who've ever tasted Julian's veggies! We did a taste test with Cyndy, our sailfin tang, and although she also loves the green (wants nothing to do with the red) she picks the purple over the green every time!!!

Yep I'm with you cschweitzer. I keep my promises or I don't make them - it doesn't make a difference what it is. That said - I don't know the reason and really can't judge the man - but . . .? I also was looking forward to hear from Borneman, but lots of other wonderful speakers and I doubt if I'll even miss him.

This is for everyone that feels it's OK to cancel (Back out of a promise) - I just wasn't raised that way. Everyone is different and I wouldn't want to do business with anyone that feels it is OK.

But hey, we now have the opportunity to hear Mr. Fatheree speak - this is going to be great! Coming over on Friday and staying till Sunday!

RA, the first one was excellent and I truely think that this one will top it by far. We have such great and dedicated people working hard putting this together and I am just extremely happy. Now that IMAC LV was canceled, this will be my only opportunity to participate in a reef conference this year.

just so you know bluecarpet matt had tried to contact him for 3 months and no response then he contacted another speaker to find out what going on and then he responed within hours. that to me is not pro by any means. no matter how big the event if you say that you will be there you should and if you can't give the club some heads up. many people bought tickets wanting to hear him speak and one of the reasons he gave that he was not ready is a cop-out in my opinion. someone of his knowldge could speak about anything and people would listen and learn from someone that has alot of knowledge in the field. i know some people are not attending because they think it is over there heads and if would have shown up just to answer questions it would be a hit. let me know next time you pay for something and don't get what you wanted and tell me how you feel.

any shane fat albert is a perfect name and i'm trying to just get along:lol:

I have to say a very big THANK YOU to everyone that has been involved. This is my first conference and just can not wait!

your welcome and hope you have a good time. did you sign up for the meet and greet on friday night? if so see you there.

I hope no one feels that being that Borneman won't be there that the conference will be any less outstanding. To be truthful, the salt study has come under intense scrutiny as to its value. I think James Fatheree is an incredible substitution as so many of us keep clams or would like to. I have a copy of his Giant clam book and it's fantastic if anyone would like to sneak a peek! Speakers like him are what make these conferences hobbyist friendly. Sprung is always fascinating and funny (duh, in his description of his presentation he says he will talk about keeping killer whales in reef tanks:) ), and IMO delivers his presentations on a level for all to understand...even newbies. The large tank build is something everyone can pull something from and who doesn't want to hear about LED's? Even with 30+ years in this hobby, I always walk away with new knowledge. If you don't know anyone, PM myself or one of the other ORCA regulars and we'll make room for you to sit with us! I know it can be a bit intimidating sometimes to attend an event like this if you don't really know anyone, but this is ORCA and a VERY welcoming group!

well said marcye. and if anyone is coming and dosn't know any of the orca members let me know and i will guide you in the direction on sitc or other orca members.

Well all i can say its going to be a good show no matter what.

But to go onto the topic a bit more, my dad bought several magic season tickets after Billy Donavin signed with them, but a few days later he then walked out of the deal, my dad could of cared less, he allready bought the tickets for clients anyways and personal use. Yes Billy was a big selling point but he cut his loses and moved on, and he does not scorn Billy for making that choice, nor do I. I still think he's a great coach and he always will be and Borneman is a good guy as well, he has done a lot for the hobby and i dont think anyone can argue with that. And for the record i was not brought up to cancel promises, but if something comes up that needs more attention than what i have promised i go ahead and do the other. I can name very well known and wealthy people that back out on things all the time, do people stop doing business when Bill Gates backs out at a speaking engagement? I dont think so. Or when Donald Trump says he wont be able to make that meeting, it happens all the time in the business world, like i said its just life and life moves on, as with this show. Its still going to be good, i just did not like the fact that someone said he should not be able to speak at a show ever again.

Man am I glad I'm not very well known or wealthy - or as far as you know me I'm not :D. This is how you were brought up - and that's fine. I keep my promises to the point I would do anything I can to keep them - sadly not everyone is that way. It was just something I was brought up with and that is respect for others - it is part of it. You seem to have a hang up with dropping names - I could drop a hundred names of people that do keep their word. I run a business and if you or any one for that matter tries to contact me through E-Mail, phone etc., out of respect for my business and my NAME I return those messages. You don't seem to get it - he doesn't respect us. Are we now to small for his big head? Has things just caught up with him :http://www.opportunitylost.org/. In this hobby he may be known but he still puts his pants on the same way - I lost a lot of respect for this man from this. This is not a person I would do business with a hand shake - money up front for you Eric.

Well i am glad to hear that you keep every single promise you make, i take my hat off to you if you keep all of your promises and never break them, that is truly awesome and i mean that. Even the best of the best cant keep all of their promises but you can and thats fantastic. And i was brought up to respect people as well, so to say that i dont is just kind of wrong in my mind.
