I don't know if its my skimmer or this is a common problem... but I can not tune this thing at all... its in 6 inches of water and it wont stay consistent. one week it takes about a week to get about 2 inches of skimmate in the cup and then the next day its overflowing the cup on me. and then sometimes it seems like its getting no air at all and the skimmer it self just fills up with water and produces no bubbles. Ive contacted coralvue and they sent me a impeller but that has not helped. its getting really annoying having to adjust this thing almost everyday. All I know is I will NOT be getting the sro3000 when I upgrade to my 180
 
Have you check and clean the volute air intake nipple? With mine I have to dial it down where team bubbles right at the neck of the collection cup. Just leave it and few hours it will start to foam normally. That's how I figure out this skimmer as every skimmer out there has their own way of tweaking it.

ya I cleaned the intake and made sure nothing was blocking it. I have the bubbles right were the cup meets the skimmer body. but it wont stay there... the bubbles either will drop way down on there own or stay where I set it for a few days then either overflow on me or drop lower again
 
Is the water level in your sump staying constant. I have a sroxp1000sss as well. Make sure there is no salt creep in the silencer and air line going to the pump. Run hot water(ro) through that to clean it.

Put in 5.5 inches of water. Adjust so you have pea sized bubbles in the neck of the skimmer and leave it for a day to see how it does. Make very small adjustments from that point. I leave mine for a day before fine tuning.

How old is it(break in period?). Just a couple suggestions.
 
How old is the skimmer?

Also, what size bubble are in the body and neck?

Depending if this is an older skimmer and it has large pea size bubbles in the body, you may need to get the newer volute with restricted venturi for the pump. Too much air drawn producing large bubbles will make the skimmer erratic.
 
The skimmer is a year old... I will try 5.5 inches of water when I get home tomorrow from work. As of right now, there's no bubbles even going up the neck. There was earlier. Looked bigger then a pea size though.
 
I also have this skimmer, been good to me. After doing much research and tinkering, my skimmer works best submerged to the point the red adjustment valve is about a half inch under water.....so its sitting in 8 inches of water. I prefer a darker skimmate, so the water level in the skimmer itself is about 1.5 inches under the thick white coller. I've never had an issue, also bubbles are very small. Sounds like you have some sort of defect going on. Hope i could be of some sort of help. I would contact reef octopus and or the place you purchased the unit. The bubble blaster pump is covered by a three year warranty. The impellar housing on mine cracked after about a years use, contacted aquacave, they gave me a number to call, sent me a brand new pump. Even got to keep the old one. I'm gonna order a new impellar for it so i have a back-up. Anyway, good luck.

The pump housing itself is 5" tall...I wouldn't consider 7.5-8" deep water. That was the suggested depth the coralvue told me to run. Here's a pic of mine....

Jeremy has always been great to deal with...It was MY understanding that the skimmer will work well in depths between 5.5 and 8 inches. As my pictures illustrates i get a very dark nasty skimmate the way mine is set up. Obviously there are other variables involved..gate valve, bio load, additives, etc. I would suggest talking to Jeremy. My skimmer works great in 7.5" of water and others obviously at 5.5. It seems there is a nice sized window of water depth this unit should work well in. It sounds more like a defect to me...Good luck.

You state at first that you were TOLD to run at 7.5 - 8". Then you said it was YOUR understanding to run it at that depth. So which is it? Just trying to help the OP get straight advice.

Yep, Jeremy is great to work with. I wish all vendors had customer support that worked as hard as he does.

I think were getting a bit picky with specific wording here.....I mentioned the impellar housing cracked on my skimmer about a year in. During the process of getting the issued resoved I mentioned the specifics of my setup. Meaning, I asked if the depth of water that i had my skimmer in (about 7.5") was ok. I was told is was......I'm not disputing in anyway that the 5.5" Jeremy said was the "optimum" depth is false. Im simply saying It was MY understanding that 7.5" was fine too. The picture i posted clearly shows the result at that depth as well. The point being...His skimmer should still "work" regardless of it being in 5.5 or 7.5" of water. If it is not, there is some sort of issue.....
 
It's just veeery inconsistent... today the bubbles are waaay down to the min water mark and last night they were where the cup meets the body
 
As said i have mine in about 5.5 inches of water. I can get a very dark stinky skim mate or lighter colour skim mate depending where the gate valve is adjusted to. I found that they are very finicky, even hands in the water will make the skimmer stop producing bubbles. I found that if you leave it so the bubbles are just starting to break at the neck, leave it a day and adjust as necessary, mine was over flowing as well i got to the point where i just dialed the gate valve down to where the bubbles would just break at the beginning of the neck, leave it for a day and adjust to get desired skim, fine tune from there. Been working great ever since.
