While I haven't been there in 8 or so years.....the diving and snorkeling in St. Marteen was marginal at best. I liked the island and had been their twice in the past. If you are in that area and want to dive....go to Saba. Not sure about the snorkeling there....didn't do any.
I just did the same cruise. St. Maarten doesn't have much to see in the water but it's not terrible. I enjoyed it. However, from St. Thomas you can take a ferry boat to St. John which is far better than both. It is easy to make all of your arrangements very quickly at the island. Apparently there are two good beaches with good reefs. I don't know the name of the one I went to. Bring your own snorkel gear. Rentals aren't that good and often run out.
i've been to both and the st thomas and st johns is better than st marteen. don't get concerned about st johns as opposed to st john's because you can easily make it to st johns from st thomas via the ferry. some of the best diving is actually between st thomas and st johns so again don't worry about one over the other. if you dive the guide that you go with will mostlikely go to both and if you snorkel you can again just travel via the ferry to both islands.
