Staaan's Tank Problem! HELP SOUGHT!

Jarrett whens the last time your calibrated your refractometer?

*BTW - thank you for testing my water.

well I have test kits they are 6 months old fauna marine for alk and sali for trates.

I will give them to you when I get new test kits next month so you do not have to run out and buy test kits.

I know I rember telling you I know how it is with the car and the school and this hobby. It is hard I had to do it when I was in college and working 3 jobs.

If you need me to hold something for you or need a frag of a slimer or sps to get you started back up ill give you one.

I do not know how true this is for leds this might help. I have alot of top water movement, no dead areas and I think that is supposed to break up the light going into the tank.

Like I said I do not know how true this is but you can try that out as well as the egg crate

Lux reading update

Lux reading update

Alright..

So I finally got around to using the Lux meter a friend let me borrow.

I looked around every where to find the Lux --> Par conversion factor constant for LEDs and more specifically Cree LEDs... and had no luck. So I couldn't convert to PAR.
This is the only table I could find..

Lux to PAR Conversion Factors
Light Source Constant
Sunlight 54
Warm White Fluorescent 76
Cool White Fluorescent 74
URI (now UV) Actinic Fluorescent 18
URI (now UV) Daylight Fluorescent 54
Actinic/Daylight Combination 38
Philips 03 Actinic Fluorescent 40
Panasonic 6,700°K Power Compact 72
Panasonic 7,100°K / 6,700°K Combination 55
Osram Powerstar Metal Halide 57
Ushio 10,000°K Metal Halide 54
Coralife 10,000°K Metal Halide 30
Venture "Daylight" Metal Halide 46
Radium "Blue" Metal Halide 51
Fusion Sulfur Lamp 41
Westron Mercury Vapor Lamp 70
Iwasaki 6,500°K Metal Halide 57

Anyway.. here are the Lux values I got from my jittery hand holding the lux photometer err whatever its called..

The top Lux value is with my DIY LED fixture hanging 1 foot above the tank, and the 2nd values (which I only obtained in the middle of the tank and a noted is 2 feet above the tank).

Any one know where I can find a table to reference my numbers as to what the should be, and to verify if they really are too high? (which I'm guessing they most definitely are.)

Or perhaps some one just "knows" where they should be from previous experience?

All the reading were taken with just 3 strings of LEDs (36 LEDs) rather than the 48 total I have. The extra 12 are just actinic, to give more of a 20,000K color... I guess mine is some where between 10,000 - 14,000K with just those 3 strings on..

There great numbers for a sps tank but if your going to keep lps its going to be hard your best bet is to get dimmable drivers then you will be fine if not raise the fixture 4 more feet so you can keep lps. I think you should just ger dimmable drivers and you will be good

Found out that I can actually split one Meanwell 60-48D to run two strings of 12 LEDs...

Cutting my initial cost for dimmable drivers in half.

In other words.. I'll only need 2 dimmable drivers instead of 4.

Now if only I can get gas prices to go down... :(

I actually heard on the news that theres a possibility of it going down to $3.25/gallon...

Who knows...
