Stand and Hood painting options

I am putting together a tank for the guy that is designing the club's website. A few weeks ago I bought a 30gal Oceanic tank and stand. Last weekend my dad and I built a hood for it. I just finished priming it all and it looks pretty good. What are my options as far as painting goes? My initial thought was to prime it and and paint it black. I probably can make that look good but has anyone else seen any really nice looking DIY paint jobs? I just do not like to see any paint brush strokes and that will probably happen if I brush it on and then roll it with a foam roller. What about that Krylon spray texture stuff? I am just brainstorming here.
 
You know you can get paint guns for like 25 bucks, assuming you have an air compressor, spray that sucker! Just watch for orange peel and runs. Probably need to prime it, sand it lightly, then spray a couple more coats.

With a decent spray gun and some good primer, you can completely cover the wood grain and spray it any color you want. It may take a couple coats and some sanding with proper grain sandpaper. I wouldn't use anything with a gloss to it for a finish coat as it will look bad IMO. Use a semi gloss for your finish coat. You have to watch what you use for primer and finish coat as laquer and urethane finishes don't like each other much. I would just go to a Sherman Williams or something and ask them for some advice. If you want I can walk you through it as well. Just IM me.

Another thought depending on what you used for material is to stain it black and let the wood grain show. I made my curent stand out of oak and stained it black. It is way cool.
 
No it was really simple! Just primed it, it is pine so it was cheap! But sucks up sooo much paint. Then painted a gray coat. Then painted with a semi gloss black. You just paint the black on and then wipe it off. It looks like s**t at this point, then you sand it lightly with 220 grit and the finish looks is what you see. Get a lot of complements on the finish. I agree in not using a glossy finish!!
 
Well...since my family wimped out on me and would not stay out at the campground this morning I worked on the stand and hood. I gave it another coat of primer. Then sprayed it all with a flat black and then I used Rustoleum Stone Creations. It is black with silver flakes. It was so easy and it looks great. I will get a picture of it once it dries..ohh and when I get my camera back from my sister :)

Not neccesarily the greatest camping day, but it still beats being cooped up at home.
 
Here is what I cam up with. I really like it. These pictures do not do it justice because you cannot see all the detailed trim. Plus the flash distorts the really color but I think you can get the idea.

Here is what it is so far for equipment:

CPR Bac pak skimmer. I am really impressed with this little thing! It is skimming really good. I am not to hip on how loud it is but it seems to be getting better. The micro bubbles have now stopped. I have a bubble eliminator and pre-skim box coming on Thursday.

I have 2x65 watt power compacts for lighting. I have live rock in there now (probably not enough) and I am going to add a bag of southdown in there when I give it to him. Will one bag be enough?

I just want to make this as easy as possible since John has never had a tank before. I would think with good maintenance he should be able to keep some easy soft corals and LPS...shouldn't he?

Do I need anything else for filtration? I that skimmer enough?
 
Ahhh.... don't anyone call the tag police on me! I have 4 tangs in there right now....achilies, yellow, powder blue, and naso. I needed a neutral place to put them so they will not fight in my main tank when I put them in there this weekend. They are all getting along great!

If they kick your door in Bob to save those fish don't fight with them. Just lay on the floor and do as they say.

You mean you can't have 4 tangs in a 30 gallon tank? Thats only 1 fish per 7.5 gallons, that's about right. Isn't it?;)
 
Looking good Bob! You may want to add some type of hangon filter or canister filter so he can run carbon on it. Plus you'll get a little more flow from it!

Where'd you get the achilles at? It's def. in my must add list to my tank! :D
 
What do you think for a hang on or canister filter?

I did forget to mention that I have a maxi-jet 1200 in there and I will probably stop at Hungs tomorrow and grab another one. I just need to do this as good and as cheep as possible since I have donated everything for this so far for him doing the website. Sgarrett donated the skimmer...THANKS SCOTT!!!
 
I used to have 2 emperor 400's on my tank when it was freshwater and never had a problem with them. Pretty big for a 30gallon though. Maybe a Emperor 280.

My dad has a fluval cansiter filter on his 30gal. FW tank and it is real good and quiet, that may be an option. You wouldn't need a real big one just to run carbon.

I have a couple old heaters laying around if you need one. Don't have much else for spare stuff I don't think. I'll look around though and see if I have anything.
 
The stand looks good, but please tell me you are gonna take off that background!

BTW how many tangs are you going to put in your 120? I want 3 in my 125 and everyone is telling me 2 at most.

I also want to say that I would be willing to donate a frag or 2.
