Stand for 55 gallon with room for sump?

Hi all,

I've got a 55 gallon glass aquarium (48"x13") that's been sitting on a wooden cabinet stand for years. Unfortunately, the internal section of the cabinet is about 9" at the narrowest portion so I was very limited in the size sump I could use.

I'm moving in a few weeks and would like to take the opportunity to change the stand to one that could accommodate a larger sump. It looks like if I can get 12" or even 13" I could get a decent sized sump. Something along the lines of this https://www.marinedepot.com/Trigger...-Trigger_Systems_LLC-6E81634-FIFRBSCU-vi.html

Any suggestions? This metal one (https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/imagitarium-brooklyn-metal-tank-stand-55-gallons) looks like it could work if I put a board on the bottom to hold the sump. However, if I could find a cabinet that would be preferred. I'm not opposed to buying a cabinet for a larger aquarium if it would hold the 55 gallon well. For instance, I was looking at something like https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petco...x18-cherry-oak-empire-series-7590110-cabinet# but not sure if the supports would be OK for a narrower tank.

Thanks!

Have you given any thought to building one yourself? I know you asked about purchasing one but if your good at diy you could pick a sump or even build your own sump which is cheaper and allows more customization. Then build the stand around that.

I just set up my first salt water aquarium 55G column tank. I used the trigger 18 crystle cube sump and can honestly say i love it. No experience though so take it with a grain of salt.

Take the demensions of DT and sump and whatever plumbing accommodations you require to a cabinet maker and have it built. This will cost more but be well worth the $.

The simplicity 75SS is 10.5 w it barley fits in the 55g stand that we have same size tank you were describing and much cheaper than a trigger it's $249 my trigger 26 was $324

Or if you want metal a local machine shop may be willing to make one. This is my 55 with a sump of matching base dimensions to DT on a metal stand that was made locally.

I've thought about it, but with everything else I have to do around the move I just don't have the time to get it done unfortunately.

Thanks - I hadn't considered that! Maybe I'll look into that this week to see what that could cost and how long it might take.

Understandable, gotta agree I'd see about having one made local. Either a wooden stand or metal. As mentioned it may cost more for the wooden but would be well worth it but whatever you choose you could still get exactly what you want.

If you have the common pine stand from the all glass brand, it is easy to modify by moving the rear center support from the inside to between the top and bottom rails. You need some way to accurately cut it but it takes maybe 20 minutes if you have the tools. Cheaper and easier than probably any other option. I have one I modified like this probably 15 years ago, I can take a photo if you want. This allows a standard 10g tank to fit inside.

That's an interesting idea. A photo would be helpful if you don't mind. I might not have the time to build a completely new stand but moving a support could be an option.

I like the idea from post #1 about buying a bigger stand and modifying it. A standard 75gal/90gal stand could be easily modified with some plywood and 1x4s to hold your 55.

The stand comes with a support in the middle of the back beam that's nailed to the inside face of the top and bottom frames. I cut that out and replaced it with two vertical supports that are directly between the frames instead of attached to the inside face. This gave me about half an inch of additional width which was exactly enough to fit a standard 10g in there.

Again, if you don't have this exact style of stand, this won't be relevant. But 15 or 20 years ago when I did this, these stands were super common and they are still being sold.

Apologies on the mess in the photo. The stand has been in my son's room supporting a 55 being used as a reptile habitat for 4 or 5 years, and he clearly isn't bothered by spider webs or sloppy cabinets. :D

Thanks for the pic! That does look like the stand I have.

However, the more fun solution that I will be pursuing is upgrading to a larger display tank. Now, a larger sump shouldn't be an issue. Managed to convince my significant other that moving was the perfect time for an upgrade. :lmao:
