Stand material bias?

I hate the thought of mangling zebra wood, rosewood, or walnut. That's why as of now I'm working with poplar and pine (some maple).

My first cab project was maple and birch and turned out ok.

I'd LOVE to have a really nice wooden stand with curly maple and other really nice woods.

Think about veneers. You can get some beautiful veneers at a reasonable price. Take a look at www.cabinetparts.com I've dealt with them a few times now with no complaints.

$4 /bf from the local sawmill. They turn me loose in their barn filled with local hardwoods. It's amazing how much you can fit in a Mazda 3

Oh now you are just rubbing it in. Last time I checked (years ago) the price was somewhat north of $7/bf!

I have a coffee and end tables that match the stand, my current project is additional kitchen cabinets to match what is already there, all in cherry.

That looks great. I'm hoping that I can pull something that nice together in the next 6 to 12 months.

I did notice an odd detail though... You seem to have an inch or two wide piece of wood vertically between the leg posts and the framing around the doors. Is this something you were looking for or is this something that you found necessary for structural reasons? I'm just curious why you didn't miter the from pieces at 45 degrees and connect that directly to the leg posts?

Oh, and did you acid stain those grooves on the leg posts? That detail looks really great.

The carcass of the stand is just a simple box made from glued up boards. The outside pieces are not really structural, but do add to the corner's strength quite a bot anyway. The inlay is Ebony in routed flutes. I like to use a bit of exotic wood in all my projects - it just adds that little bit extra.
