Starphire scratch remover?

I picked up a 120g 4 sided starphire last week with a few small scratches and was wondering since starphire is softer than standard glass, is there any possibility of polishing it out?

IIRC some scratch removing systems have a final product applied that fills in the voids. It may not be safe to use that final step on the wet side of the tank.

Buffing a scratch out of glass by hand is going to take some serious elbow grease for sure.

Picked it up in escondido off of recycler.com. It is a 120g 48x24x24 Eurobraced starphire with one 6x6 corner overflow. It came with a 42" custom stand and 9" canopy (pine and maple). It has a perfect viewing height. Perfect condition exept a few small scratches. He also threw in 2 brand new acrylic inserts for the background one black and one midnight blue, 4 new 55w pc bulbs and lots of other odds and ends. I could not believe the price, you better sit down for this one $345!!! 2 years old and very well kept. He sold it to upgrade to a 150 48x30x24.
By the way I need a kit for the inside of the panes. Any help is greatly appreciated. Sorry dont have a digital camera right now otherwise I would post pics. Will soon be starting up a thread on this tank as soon as I get time to start setting it up.

Thanks,
Jason

OMG...that is crazy! Nice job snatching that one up.

what brand is the tank? I think I saw that ad but it said Visio and they don't make starphire tanks....does the glass look clear or blue/green?

Great score either way!

I just talked to one of my rubber customers that's in auto glass. His comment was if you can feel the scratch with your finger nail you will be wasting your time. If it's just some distortion maybe caused by abrasion then it's possible to clear it up. He did warn though that often you might end up removing a scratch only to replace it with a major distorted look. As a for instance he said he'd try and remove a scratch from a windshield if it was on the margins but not if it was smack in front of where the driver would be looking through it. He said in some case the scratch is removed but what remains is a pieces of glass that's no quite clear anymore.

What's used is an abrasive compound and wheel and you basically grind down the area around the defect until the level is the same. Just like sanding a piece of wood only it takes a lot longer.
