...or pretty close. He's ordinarily brownish black with a yellow blush to his finnage and tail, and two dark spots on his rear.
Or deeper black with 'stars' all over him, little points of pure white.
Or pinto, black/white with a Y on his face and his little cirri (Dr. Seuss pompoms) snow white.
Or totally dark, if he's hiding.
And these color changes happen within seconds. Not quite as good as a cuttlefish, but the fastest quick-change artist I've seen in the fishy realm.
He's quite shy: once he's gotten your appearance down pat as Not A Threat he'll be out and about. Move and you'll spook him. He's still new.
He goes after film algae on the glass, will even nosh some tuft-algae (not hair) on the rocks, will pull at hair algae but prefers it short (nothing really likes the longer form of hair algae: shortening it will get it eaten.)
His max size is about that of a yellow watchman goby, 3-5 inches, and mine is already 4. He eats nonstop, so plan to feed this guy if you don't have mega amounts of algae. He tries to eat mysis and cyclopeeze and even micro pellet, but a combtooth blenny has trouble doing that: his teeth are meant for scraping, and he has trouble taking in these offerings. He will suck on pellet for a while and usually spit it out as impossible.
I've 'dirtied up' my tank to get him and a rainsford settled in and eating well, and I would recommend this during the settling-in period. I have not yet tried Formula Two spirulina cubes, but I expect he will go for them.
He may jump during the settling-in period. Secure your tank. He also appreciates rock 'caves' in which to hide while watching you.
Compatibility: in a 54g, he's ok with small gobies, with the yellow watchman (bluster from the watchman, no bites) shrimp, pearly jawfish, firefish and chromis.
