Starry Blenny Pale

Hey everyone,

I've kept multiple starry blennies over the years, love em. Besides the normal and startled or ticked colorations I've noticed mine will occasionally look like this:

Anyone know why? It's only done this a few times before (had it for 3 or 4 months). My previous one did it a couple times during the 3 years I had it. So, I'm not too worried by it, just curious. Thanks!

I've had mine for a couple years now. See this color often at night or if I suddenly turn lights on.

Ok. that's what I was thinking too. Yes, the pic was a few minutes after the actinics came on. I've only seen it a couple of times, but I'll look more regularly. Thanks!

Lights came on and it looks normal...not surprised though. Definitely agree with CedzAquAddictio, it is a rare occurrence.

It's one of my favorite fish. Lots of personality and pretty too! I put a mirror against my tank when I get new wrasses and the starry always changes colors like that when he seems himself.

Yeah. I wouldn't stress too much over it. Doesn't seem to be doing any harm.

Interesting fish, huh?

Yes it is an interesting fish! That's too funny r2odie :lmao:. They can be quite aggressive too. I added yellow-headed jawfish like an idiot and my first starry blenny destroyed it. I also saw it do a couple death rolls with a sixline I had. The sixline had it coming though. Overall great fish and hard worker, but not a pushover!

The first time mine did that I freaked out and ran to grab the camera. When I got back 30 seconds later he was back to normal. I've seen mine do this a small handful of times over the year. I have no clue what it means though.

Mine will attack my forearm or hand when working on the tank. It doesn't hurt but he latches on pretty hard and it is startling.

had to pull mine out attacked my maderine and killed it never seen this before real good algae eater but i have no idea he was that aggressive...

Yeah that was my first reaction too.

Haha mine hasn't become that bold yet, but it will attack the magnetic algae scrubber. My bicolor blenny (before I got my starry) would do that occasionally. It wouldn't latch on, but just dart out, tag me, then dart back into the rocks. Yes, his actions caused a few unwanted fragging incidents in his day.

Wow, that sucks. I knew they were aggressive to other fishes that look like them, but that's interesting. Wonder why it'd kill the mandarin.

If I am not mistaken those are the starry's breeding colors. I have a young one that has now reached nearly full size and he sports those colors frequently.

Yes those are breeding colors. I would think they would adopt them when excited as well, but have no data to back that up, just my opinion.
