start of a new adventure 265gal starphire

hmm...jarhead you asking me to baby sit your frag until you move to colorado if you keep your trash talk going you might not see your frag again. I will pack it up and send it to my Pal Jonathan he always have my back and say good thing about me....:-)

Dang, this is getting interesting. Where's my popcorn? :)

Anthony, your little grasshopper up here could use some frags, too ;)

ok let's get back to reefing.

I will throw this theory out and you guys can chime in.

What I trying to do is to replicate my reef tank to the ocean reef.

I will list some important category that we need to replicate.
#1 The sun----------->our light system can almost get there
#2 The water-------->our salt is pretty darn close
#3 Nutrient----------->our filter can almost get it down
#4 Flow---------------->our power can almost do it
#5 Food---------------->our fish food is pretty good.

But my thought regarding coral growth go a little further. In the reef there are 100 of fish(angel and butterfly) constantly nipping at the coral therefore the coral have to accelerate their growth to recover the damage. And most of us don't have the gut to house angel or butterfly who will pick on our corals. May be if we frag the corals more often it will accelerate the growth of corals just like you trimming a tree to promote new branch grow.

Let's have a good discussion on this topic.

I doubt it. What I see is recovery time after a frag has been clipped before the coral can start growing again. But, this is one of the ways corals spread in the wild. (and in my tank!)

It takes a while for the flesh to heal and cover the area where the cut is before it can start to grow out again.

Jon I'm refering to colony since in the reef there is no frag. By repairing one of the branch may be it accelerate grow for the whole colony.

hmmmm...what I meant is that when you cut a frag off, the coral has to spend a lot of energy healing before it can grow more. But your theory merits more investigation. I would bet the A. Calfo has pondered this same question.

Some animals do reproduce when there is a threat, but whether corals do that I kind of doubt.

if you watch any reef video you can see 100 of fish nipping or even took a bite out of the corals. How do the coral can recover to stay alive when you have that much of fish keep on for 24/7.

I have notice my male crosshatch and he has some hungry moment took a bite on some of my sps but it heal up in about 2 days. I feel like we can almost replicate the reef in the ocean at home with all of the new technology and knowlege. We just need a little bit more to get there and I don't know if this will promote corals to grow faster.

that's a very interesting theory and would cause a temporal shift in stocking. I know many reefers keep supposed "bad" fish in their reefs with no problem.

Since when did Anthony become a rocket scientist? That make people go hmmmm

HAHA Steve I just want to improve my reef system. I want all the edge I can get to keep a healthy reef and I feel like we missing something.

BTW Steve instead of jabbing post why don't you read a couple post ealier when I told Jon that I will send him all of your frag if you keep open your mouth.

Thank God no more sand...:-)

It's about time you post a FTS! Been waiting :)

About fragging your coral for quicker growth - Maybe it seems like the coral grows quicker after it's fragged because you can more easily see the new growth. It's not as subtle of a change...just a theory though

so did you go to Stanford?? TBone :uzi: Anthony :D

You have web enabled cameras in your stores? I still haven't gotten around to getting this set up.

60's, at this age you should be on top of this or maybe your in the area where cows are only raised :D
here's what i use, just get a good desktop or build your own PC w/ tons of hard drive. comes out cheaper this way or stand alone dvr works too but cost more. all around clock security and can be view at all times 24hrs daily on internet. this is good since you live on RC.
