OK so hear goes nothing.. I hope.. I wonder who or what will read this anyway.

It all started many years ago.... (oops not that far back)

SO...

I have a 120 that sits in the living room. I have 2 fx5's and about 120+lb of live rock. and 100+ live sand.

The stand is a custom built.

I have a HOB RO skimmer and 2 panaorama pro's with added on modules.

Back before the holidays of 2012 I wanted to make sure the tank was going to be fine and have no problems for the person that was going to watch it... SO.. I did a stupid thing, was not thinking at all, and replaced ALL my foam in BOTH fx5's at once...

Well needless to say everything spiked by the time I got back and the tank was freaking out big time...

I had been up on water changes and everything else and had ZERO HA (hair algae) at all.

BAM... HA everywhere...

SO.... In my head the day after christmas I said.. I need to upgrade and get off this and have an actual sump and a dedicated area with out having to worry about sunshine or anything else.

I have been living in this house for about 11 years. It is 3800 sqft upstairs and 3800 sqft downstairs. Lots of room.

The ex had a craft room setup and was still storing all of her stuff, right below the kitchen. I decided that is the place I wanted to make into a dedicated fish room with DT and Sump.

  • Water: check.
  • Plumbing for sink: check.
  • Electric: check.
  • Room: check.

SO.. The day after Christmas I went to the LFS and ordered a 180 Marineland predrilled. Funny they did not even want a deposit... A friend of mine (the guy I got the 120 from) and I have been driving about 60 miles one way to this LFS that we have had the best luck at and the best customer service. We have been going there at least once a week every week... so yeah they knew us. Plus he purchased his 265 from there.

I started to clean out and pack up all the craft stuff and measure to make sure what I had planned was going to work.

I had in-visioned the tank to go on the wall where I have an 88" bump in. and just drywall all around it.

Well I was convinced to make it a built in and just bring the wall out 6 inches to make it flush. Since it is a basement and concrete floor.. I knew this would not be an issue.

Now do not get all up in arms over my pictures... and keep in mind that this was a house built in the late 60's, which had been modded a few times in different areas.

Here are a few prebuild/post cleanup pictures:

That is the bump in/out where the tank was going to go with drywall all around it and a stand below it... Before it was decided to just make it a built in wall.

As you can see there is one outlet in the back and I need to move a hotwater (baseboard heat) pipe.

The water damage look is from years of having that wood to the floor and nothing but particle type board for wall covering.

The floor is from 12x12 tiles and the glue left from it.

So the tank would go here:

This is what the finished project will look like:

I do not have actual pix of the stand build to except to say 4x4 with 2x2 tieing it together.

I will stop there for a bit and see what comments or what ever I get.

It's late worm. This is te first "blog I have read on RC. Most don't make use of it. Maybe I should do one.

I would use all PVC instead of copper pipe. Likely this will not make a huge different but why add more copper into the water if you have a choice, which you do.

I would add the top beams on top of the posts rather than on the side and attached it to the post with screws, as you are doing. As is, your tank is really suport by the few screws only which will give over time. Small tanks are Ok as is but a large tank 250G plus are heavy and the screws will fail. Change it before you go any further.

You have three 2X4 in the front that bear the front 2X4 beam but the side and back are only support by screw. In time the back and side will give a little while the front will not and will crack a large tank place on it.

The tank is actually held up by the posts. The screws are only holding the post in place.

The 2x4 on the top front edge is 1 3/4 in front of the tank. Basically a small lip on the front side.
