Currently I am deployed with the Army National Gaurd to Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti Africa. There is a local company that works with the MWR here and puts on classes. Can't wait to get started and do my first open water dives on the reefs around here.

Have fun! Watch out for Great Whites!

My brother was active duty marines a few years back and was certified in Japan.

I was certified in a rock quarry in southern Illinois. Pretty sure you win.

EDIT: OH!.......................Thanks for your service! Be safe!

You'll love it. I have been certified for years and am a PADI Divemaster. I was stationed in Cuba at GTMO for a year and dove the many reefs there, they were great.

Also, I have dove that same rock quarry in IL, (Mermet Springs), its okay for around here, but is very cold (to me) even at shallow depths. (A dry suit is a must).

Enjoy. BTW, I am in the KY Guard (438th MP) how did you get a tour to Africa?

I dove Mermet in August the year I was certified. We stayed above the thermocline for the most part (around 30 feet). Water was probably in the 80s or higher above that point, but was probably in the 50s or 60s below there.

We would dip below the thermocline to cool off, but we didn't stay there long. I was wearing a 5 mil full wetsuit and was comfortable to warm at shallower than 30 feet, but yeah, anything deeper, you'll at least need a hood and gloves and probably 7mm or thicker wetsuit. I did see lots of drysuits while I was there though.
