Lol. Dude that's how it goes.

You have to get them one on one to have a good convo. I just met up with a guy at my local club, and he was super awesome. But if I had met him at a meet, I would have been too nervous to ask for anything. Dude has like $100k in corals in his house.

If your club has a forum, send a pm to one of the members asking if you can come check out their frags. That's what I did. And I found an amazing seller 3 blocks away from me.

Remember, these are all geeks, just like us.

Single one of them out, like I did, and make a friend.

I now have an amazing friend and one of the most successful reefers I have ever met. His house is cooler than every LFS I have been to.

Just send a pm, ask if you can look at his/her system. Most of us are very quick to indulge a newbie. I love showing people my tank, and it's crap compared to some that I have seen in my own neighborhood.

Hey I know that you guys have busy lives but I was wondering if you could check the Ohio craigslist. I saw some stuff on there and was wondering what you guys think. I realize that most are pretty vague but tell me what you think.

I feel for the guy though. As gregarious as I may seem on here from time to time, I have a rather difficult time making friends and speaking with strangers 1:1.

I think it has more to do with transitioning into a grouchy old dude. :debi:

Rough Numbers for a 270G tank that has been running 1 year:

Used Tank with sump odds and ends: $2K (The cheap part)
Custom Installation of Tank/Sump: $2K (270G glass tank is really heavy)
Restoration of cabinet: $500
Power and Plumbing: $3K (Sump in basement, 2 20 amp lines)
Lighting: 4 Kessels $1600 (1 decided to go for a swim)
Apex Neptune: $700
Pumps: $800
Rock: $1K
~20 fish and 10 corals: $1K (Lost 5-6 fish and some corals in the process)
RO System, 2 50g tanks, and automatic topoff: $1K

Call it ~$15K for the whole thing. Not sure if I would do it again but I do love it.

I started with a real decent 120g. I think I just past 7k in the two months I have had it. Aside from maintenance, account for impulse buys, mistakes, and the unknown. Haha

Ok cool. I can look at map.

Too bad you can't drive to wisconsin. Some person just had a full 120 system with cooler for like $600. You probably could sell the cooler for $200, and still get away with a complete start up for $400. A killer deal.

I will check out the northern Ohio craigslist options. But be prepared to drive a bit, just remember, a bit of gas money compared to saving a potential $1000 is nothing.

Have you come up with a possible budget for your build? As well as how much you have in hand to drop on a potential sytem?

Lighting is the biggest cost, both initially and long term. The lighting requirements and costs for a fish only system is much less expensive than for a reef tank. If you are patient you canfind used systems at very low prices
