Hey Dano,

What made you go with the Tunze besides the name. I'm spinning in circles deciding on a skimmer. I don't want to outrageously expensive and looking to stay in the 350.00 range. That 9010 is one compact skimmer, if I had come across that I could have made the fuge alot larger.

Size and cost were the main issues I was dealing with. The Tunze was recommended and after I did some research this one seemed to meet my requirements the best. I have not read many negative issues compared to other skimmers I looked at. I still left 10" across for the drain area with allows for a 1" lip on the edge, 6" for the skimmer and 3" for plumbing. The plumbing will run the length of the drain area to slow the flow down and will have a T in the pipe to reduce and hopefully eliminate the bubbles. A drawing is below. I could probably have reduce the width by 1 or even 2 inches to increase the fuge size but I did not want to limit myself for anything in the future. The skimmer will be mounted in the open edge area you see in the drawing.

Below is a simple drawing of the new sump. Nothing fancy and it will also have lamp and probe brackets installed. The total is 34"L X 15"W X 16"H. The compartments are 10" for the drain, 16" for the fuge and 8" (to include the baffles) for the return. The bulkhead in the return area will be plugged for now but I thought it best in case I need it in the future.

please post back about the Tunze when you get it setup, I've really got my hearts set on a Euro RS135, but would consider that because of their solid reputation. I'm waiting for FedEx now for some new toys

ahh sorry. i swear i thought i read everything. hhaa yours is the only 90g thread i can say ive read completely, i guess not carefully enough! =(

No problem. My delay right now is the new sump and skimmer. I have been holding off for over a month trying to get a sump that allows me to add a better skimmer. Plus the skimmer was back ordered for 5 weeks. I don't feel comfortable adding livestock until the sump and skimmer check out.

The first inhabitant will most likely be purchased when I get back from my trip next week. I should have a few weeks with no travel in order to provide a supervised QT environment. After 4 weeks of QT then it will go into the tank. So we are looking at the end of November before anything goes into the tank.

Dano

are you going to use a filter sock? If so I believe you are using the guy I recommended for the sump right? He told me that he would install one on the sump for me free of charge. Its a good thing to have even if you dont use it.

Yes I am using the guy you recommended.

If I plumb it like the drawing in the above post I am hoping I shouldn't have to if the objective is to reduce bubbles. At this time I don't know where I would put it. If I have it right below the drain bulkhead even with a filter sock it may be too close to the skimmer.

Are you adding it to reduce bubbles or to actually filter the water?

alittle of both. mainly to filter water. my sock and skimmer are less than 1 inch apart no issues. Just suggesting the the sock bracket so you have it in case you care to use it in the future.

Can you give me an idea of the type of bracket and sock you a looking at. I could possibly install it right under the bulkhead and still be able to run the piping if it doesn't work out.

Can you post a link as where to get this sock? The ones I have seen are 4" in diameter and use a 3 3/4" bracket.

Thanks

go to the guy's website that you ordered your sump from and look at sump #24 something similar to that though in mine you slide the sock in and out (easier to get it out in tight spots) I'll see if I can post a pic of mine tommorrow

Can you verify the Tunze 9010 width. I believe it's 4.5". The drain area on my sump is 10" wide and has a 1" lip on the left side. If the 9010 is 4.5" wide this leaves 4.5" for a sock bracket which cuts it really close.

the problem is that depending on your water level, the cup might sit below the lip (like mine does). this is closer to 6" wide

One more thing... the brackets sit wider than the unit. I measured my brackets to be 5.25" from end to end. So this should be used for the width.
