Starting a new 90 Progress will be updated

I have my tunze 9010 on a platform made of eggcrate and PVC to avoid this cup platform almost like an "oildrilling platform" Roger in the Tunze Forum has the exact measurements but 4.5" looks pretty close to me with 6 3/4" going the other way with the sump kit attached

That is definately an option. Even if I did this, my cup would still be below the lip. My water level in that section is 2.5" below the top. Anything more than about 1.75" (from the top) and the cup will be below the lip.
 
My water level will be 13.5" high (2.5" from the top). How high of a platform would be needed if I decide not to use the brackets? I believe the specs say from 4" to 11" which means a 4" high platform should work.
 
I have the guy building the sump checking to see if I have enough room. It would be nice to be able to have a choice of brackets or a platform.

The cup width shouldn't be an issue as the open space is 6" and the sock bracket would be almost couple of inches or so below the rim. It could be an issue if the cup is larger than 6".

Okay, now I am a little confused while trying to give you the answer. It is clear that if you use the "in-cabinet" setup (with the pipe attached), then the water level needs to be between 4 and 11". Howeve, here is where my confusion starts.

If you go with the "internal" setup (without the pipe attached), the directions are not as clear. It says that the water level should correspond with "the data of the unit". This is indicated by the blue squiggly line. This water line is about 1" from the top of the skimmer. This is the 11" mark (plus the height of the feet if it sits on the bottom or on a platform).

Now what I don't know is if they mean to keep it at this level for this kind of setup, or does it simply mean you should not go higher than this.

The second question is what is the advantage of using the "in cabinet" setup. I thought it was mostly for use if your water level was below the 11" mark. But if my understanding of this whole thing is wrong, then that doesn't make sense.

I am sorry that this is probably just adding to the confusion rather than answering the question at hand.
 
I posted the above question in the Tunze forum and Roger had this to say:

The pipe keeps the water level at roughly 11" since the water can only exit from the pipe which is about 11" high. Without the pipe the water level should be within an inch of the marked water line which should be considered the maximum.

So if you use the pipe, then a water level of anywhere from 4" to 11" will work. If you don't use the pipe, then the water level should be between 10" and 11".
 
Day 82

Latest update.

I got back from the week long business trip yesterday and everything was still alive a there were no floods. It sure was nerve racking since this is the longest I have left the tank unattended.

The new sump/fuge shipped Friday and will be here early this week. Below is a picture.

I will be changing everything out sometime shortly after November 6th. I have 5 days off for some vacation which will allow me to make sure all goes well. As mentioned in a previous post I am doing a lot of changes when I change the fuge.

I have a small amount of cyano in the current fuge so I am planning to replace the Macroalgea. Does anyone know if the Miracle Mud should be reused or should I replace it also?

I also noticed this in the tank. Anyone have an idea what this is. Click on the image to view the video.



I also found some more bubble algae on one of the larger rocks. I purchased two Emerald crabs today which may help. I have heard it's hit or miss. I decided to also purchase the first fish which will be a Foxface Lo (Siganus vulpinus) which may also eat the Valonia. While I was at it I added some Trochus snails to the list.

Yes I was able to make it fit. At least I think so. If you view the video you'll see the tank could use it.
 
Day 84

Added the first fish although I broke a rule by not putting it in a quarantine tank first. I figured this one had less risk so I am taking a chance.

It's already swimming around and eating some of the algae. Not as shy as others I have heard about.

I hope zma21 is happy now. :)

Now that you are getting close to the 90 day mark, I would like to get your opinion/impression of the LR that you bought from Premium Aquatics. Are you happy with what you received, amount of life on arrival/now, and would you do it again/recommend it? From the pictures it looks great. I will be purchasing rock for my 90 in the next month and just wanted you thoughts on the Premium Aquatics rock.

The LR had some life but there was a misunderstanding in the size of the pieces I received. I requested two pieces in the 12" to 15" range with the remaining in the 6" to 10" range.

What I received was 4 large pieces each about 15" or more. This made it very difficult to arrange. Two of which where flat table pieces and one (on the right bottom) I question as being live rock as nothing live was on it and it still has no growth.

I ended up removing one of the large pieces that had some major bubble algae and was a flat boring piece. I have also discovered bubble algae on the questionable bottom right rock. This and hair algae is all that will grow on it.

The smaller pieces you see I purchased locally from another reefer. I got 40 lbs for $100.

If you purchase from PA I suggest trying the Marshall LR. It was not available when I made my purchase. Also call and be very clear on what size pieces you want.
 
Thanks for the information. Perhaps I will wait and see if some comes available locally. I would hate to pay $5 per pound if I could get just as good for $2-$3.
