Starting my propogation business...

No new pics yet... The opressive heat has put a bit of a wrench in the gears. Hopefully the last of the pressure washing will be done tonight, and I can start the concrete work tomorrow. Pics will follow then. The local newspaper has apparently heard about my business and wants to interview me tomorrow morning.

Hey chewitback - it sounds like you are making some good progress and luckily our heatwave is breaking. This summer weather has been horrible.

I'd love to see your prop shop once its up and operational, especially since I'm probably only a couple streets away from it. :)

Eshook, you are welcome to come by whenever you like, once things are up and running. In fact, I will be having an open house for the propagation farm once it is presentable. The newspaper printed a story on the business today that spanned 2 pages with color pics! It's some good PR for sure.

Interested to see pics as well as everyone else here! My wife and I are starting our own business/hobby in a spare bedroom with 2 4x2x1 frag tanks. If there really is significant profit to be made we will definitely expand. As of right now we are farming both wild and high-end named corals to appease to different types of customers.

I just got the internet up and running at the new place today, so more pics to follow once time allows. However, progress has been a bit of a standstill due to the heat wave, my concrete guy's daughter had a huge car accident (so he has been up in chicago where she was sent to undergo several operations on her ankle, leg, and hip), and my carpenter hasnt gotten back to me with a time on rebuilding the wood walls (garage doos is being ripped out with the entire wall to be replaced with double doors, and the opposite side should be redone as well because its in rougher shape than originally thought). other than that, I bribed the best plumber in the area to get me a drain to the storm sewer in the next 3-4 weeks for the waste water and excess water that may accumulate upon the floor... which will hopefully be epoxied right after the drain is placed. I have, however, purchased what will be the tanks, as well as the 1500 gallon saltwater storage reserve and will buy the 1600 gallon freshwater reserve (for evaporation and store freshwater to use in making the saltwater for the saltwater reserve). so there has been some progress, however small. I'm still hoping to get things up and running here in the next month or so, if there are no more holdups.

thanks reefcupid! i should note, after re-reading my previous post, that the DOORS need to be ripped out, and i bribed the plumber NOT because the drain to the storm sewer would be illegal/unethical (the city thought it would actually be a good idea to have 300 gallons or so of the RO's waste water pumped through the storm sewer daily to help flush debris buildup out of there) but because he is booked up for the next 6 months or so (he is contracted out to help install the sewer system that is being built here in town), and somehow it will magically happen in the next 3 or 4 weeks after the parts arrive. bonus.

I have between 50-65 species in my tank, including a strain of frogspawn that I have groomed all the green out of (pink with hot pink tips), however, I'm concentrating on just the production of anemones for the first stage of my business. Within the anemones, I have 3 different color strains of RBTAs with all red, red with a metallic green mantle, and pink. I have others on the way from wholesalers once things get started, however. Thre rest I will wait to propagate until things establish

By tank, I mean several tanks linked together in my friends shed. It's about 400+ gallons of tanks linked together to keep them all in holding until things are ready at my new place

Would you be willing to take pictures of your current tanks and equipment, so we can see how things have evolved and trace back where things started?

not much progress since i last posted, however im going to a farm auction tomorrow morning to acquire the second reserve water tank. this one is 1600 gallons, but is expected to go for real cheap because most farmers dont want to deal with these things anymore (so says the seller). Its expected to go for under $50 and is only 45 minutes away from where i live. I also have a couple friends coming over on Sunday night and Monday, so I should be able to make some legitimate progress then, and plan on taking some pictures to show everyone whats up. Hopefully I will get the concrete work done as well as pressure washing the totes that will be used as the tanks. I got the totes for cheap, but most of the waste oils inside seem to be baked in, so i might have to just find another seller who has ones that were either unused or simply used for water or food enzymes (something a little less viscus that wouldn't leave this kind of residue). Other than that, i purchased all the lighting i plan to use to start, which are 400W metal halide low bay lighting systems (with bulbs) that are used in warehouses. I found a man on craig's list that was selling them for $20 a piece. Since i was buying several, he cut the price a bit and i walked with 8 of them and 2 extra bulbs for $135! ok, time to work at the real job. pics to follow this weekend!
