hello i just set up my 120 gal tank got the water in the light in the filter running and rock in
can someone please tell me what is the first animals i should introduce to get rolling

You do not introduce animals until after the cycle, which may take from 4 to 8 weeks depending on the quality of the rock or the method you're using. My own, that takes about 4 weeks, involves dropping in a pinch of regular flake fishfood and waiting until there is ammonia, then no-ammonia. Follow that with a 4 week quarantine for your first fish, or dipping and observation of your first coral; but meanwhile, give it about 4 weeks of ONLY micro-hermits, snails and bristleworms---your store may GIVE you a few of the latter. They reproduce fairly well in the average tank. Once the snails have done their thing for 4 weeks, the tank should be stable for one fish.

Thank you for quick replies. This is my first reef tank but I have kept marine fish tank for many years. The tank has not been cycled and yes I am familiar on what a cycle is. Is there other ways I can cycle the tank then the usual way with a fish tank. Normally I use a very strong fish or 2 (lion,trigger,puffer, damsels etc.)

with a reed can i use other animals ??

You can use a frozen shrimp or dose pure ammonia. The frozen shrimp worked very well for me w/o having to dose or buy anything.
I did use MB7 to boos the cycle and a few pounds of LR. It took me less than a week.

Please don't use a live fish! As stated above dosing pure ammonia without surfactants or perfumes works well (you can get it at any ACE hardware store), or if you are in a hurry Dr. Tim's One and Only bacteria in a bottle will give you a cycle in a few days.

Define "to get rolling"?
Are you asking about how to cycle a tank with live critters?
In general thats frowned upon now as you are purposefully exposing the critter to potentially toxic ammonia levels...
Its best to now throw a table shrimp in or sprinkle some fish food in for a couple days or dose raw ammonia (up to 1 or 2ppm max),etc.. or use bacteria in a bottle products to start the cycle..


But if you mean what animals,etc.. you should have in your tank in general then...
What you put into your tank fish/coral wise is really a personal thing.. So thats 100% up to you.. We don't tell you what color car to drive or how to arrange your closet just like we don't tell you what things to put into your aquarium..
