Steve Irwin-Killed by a Stingray!

To quote a phrase,

"The light that burns twice as bright, burns half as long..."

...and Steve Irwin burned so very brightly, while controversially.

We're all conservationists in this forum, of sorts.

He was passionate, driven, quirky, and at times reckless, but seemed to always have his heart in the right place.

Poor lad. Poor wife and kids. That has to take everyone for a headspin. :sad2:

Crikey!
I knew barbs were dangerous, but to be poked to death by a bull ray? How many times have I gone diving in Hawaii, Socal, and other places with rays????:sad1:

He will be missed, but ill say one thing. He died doing what he liked to do best, in my opinion that is the best way to go. May he have fun up there with the big guy. Feel sorry for his family.

Crikey, I'll miss that bloke.

He did amazing things for conservation, and I have a tremendous amout of respect for him. He will be missed! It's a shame Baby Bob never really got to know him but at least there's plenty of video to document his life. His children can be proud!

Jeni, it was a freak accident. From the description of how he was swimming above the ray it seems as though the poor animal felt threatened. Almost like Steve was unintentionally in a stalking posture.

It was a terrible and freakish accident.

I wouldn't cancel my plans. I swam with rays once and it was completely unplanned. I was at a kay in the Bahamas called Coco Kay. I was out snorkeling and I got paid a visit by a couple of rays. They remind me of dogs in the way that they seem to enjoy human companionship. They just stopped and stared. I pet them and when they got bored they just swam off.

It sucks but Darwin won in the end

It is terrible that he died but did anyone else feel that he had used up 8 of his 9 lives.

Plus that stunt with is baby a couple of years ago.

It is a shame that a person with such opportunity would do so many questionable things that had to catch up on him eventually.

dang

dang

When I was younger I would get up early saturday morning and watch his show every week. He inspired me in lots of ways to help improve the environment and care for animals.

Poor guy

Not defending what the guy did with baby bob, but everything is relative to a person's position in life. Bringing a little kid around a crock is insane from our point of view. But when you spend as much time with crocks n' gators as you do people, you tend to think less of it. I wouldn't think anything of bringing a child on my four wheeler or to my work, but to an outsider I would seem nuts.

Some people think "what are you doing bringing a dog around your child....you're crazy and irresponsible!" To most other people, its normal.

Everything is relative to our positions in life....

I'm gonna go watch his movie now!

I cannot believe it! That is so sad.. Poor Terry, Bindi, and Bob.. I loved watching him on TV and all that he has done for animals.. Very shocked to hear this.. :-(

wow what a shock
i loved that guy, watched all his shows and stuff. i think it had a lot to do with how i got interested in animals and stuff in the first place. He actually visited my uncles wolf ranch in lockport Il one time, that was really cool. what a shame though.

I was stung by a sting ray in my hand in cancun about 2 years ago. hurts like hell, but i think ill be more careful next time.....

R.I.P. Steve!!
