Steve's 330 gal Work Tank/475 gal system

been a fish guy since I was a little fellow, went into salt back in the '80's, just fish never any corals or inverts...due to family, work etc. I went about a dozen years with only a 5 gallon with a single clown and anemone...for the last 3 years I have had a 120 gallon with fish, anemones, inverts, zoas and leather; now of course I just want something BIGGER

-I will keep my same theme of fish, and easy corals, don't know if I'll ever get courage/knowledge to get into LPS and SPS but my main love has always been fish

-doing an acrylic tank 138" Long x 24" wide x 26" tall, rear internal drain box, (4) 1" returns and (3) 1.5" Drains, it is going to be in my office at work so yes I wanted wider but just wouldn't fit in the space I have, I think my tangs will really enjoy the cruising distance though :fish1:; I am supposed to have the tank by end of Feb.

-will have a sump under the stand holding 71 gallons, a refug with 55 gallons and a 38 gallon ATO tank

THE BAD: commercial building with cement floor so no plumbing going down, behind tank is lobby so no fish room and if I wanted to go up and out I would need to go over 100' run to get to an area that I could have anything, so I will be rolling BRUTE cans in for water coming in and running a hose to a floor drain for water going out

THE GOOD: it is in my office which I can then view for 8-11 hours each day, way more than I could ever see it at home, I work with some other fish guys so while I'm on the road or vacation I have someone to carefully watch and feed for me

GOING TO GET RIPPED: I already know as I won't be doing things like most people do, that is OK I have thick skin but in all honesty please stop me from making mistakes if you see it, I by no means am even close to an expert at this stuff, learned a ton thru the years but I am smart enough to realize all the things I DON'T know, I have had good luck with my current set up so just going bigger, running Marineland Bio Wheels (ok sit back down in your chair and cease the name calling :crazy1:), my LFS runs this also and I really trust him, (4) Eheim 1260 pumps, Apex, (3) AquaUV 57 watt, Reef Oct. Regal 300SSS skimmer, a Vortech MP60 head and various other heads; don't know about lights or heaters yet, still researching/deceiding

MISC: will be running shallow sand, I built my stand from 2 x 2 x 3/16 steel wall tubing and it is currently at powder coating, and I will put 3/4" plywood and 1" foam under the tank, I put unistrut on the rear of my stand and will make brackets to come up an over and hang my lights, I will be installing a back up generator for the circuits (and others in the building) and have (2) dedicated 20amps at the tank with ethernet port for the Apex, macro and pods in my refug and few hundred pounds of rock (boy will that be a challenge for my, to say I am a really bad aquascaper would be a compliment, I won't even post my current pile of rocks, with what I see you folks doing on RC I am ashamed and will stay in hiding)

thanks, hoping this goes as smooth as my current 120 went, have my poor fish crammed in a 50 gallon breeder for QT, need to get the new one set up and cycled so they can have their freedom back

I hear you! Our fish and corals are stuffed into 2 rubbermaid stock tanks, and the tangs think is UFC fightnight everyday down there lol...

that is what I am worried about, I have egg crate cut and test fit if I need to block somebody off but with a 50 gal and PBT, Naso, Juv. Imperator, 2 OC clowns, Splendid Dotty and Arabic Dotty I fear seperator could also cause crowded feeling and more brawls, going to feed well (small amounts 3-4 times a day) and do lots of water changes to try and keep everyone as happy as possible

That is one big footprint!
Awesome.

thanks, really wanted wider just couldn't fit in the office, will be taking out an outside window to move in stand and tank then putting window back in; the way my luck goes it will be a 10 degree day at move time!

LOL, our tank ships tomorrow (should arrive monday) and the car said -30 this morning (MN), I'm hoping we don't have to take the door off... :eek2: Do you need to pull out the window frame also or just the windows?

Sounds like you have a good feeding strategy for the QT.

commerical building so the window is frame-less, I'm no expert at it so hiring a window guy (he also has 12 vacuum cup handles we can borrow) I think it is glued in with silicone

so today I have all of my fish (less my Green Mandarin which is in my DT still) in my 50 gal QT, they are:

-Blonde Naso Tang (6")
-Blue Tang (6")
-Juvenile Imperator Angel (5")
-Splendid Dotty Back (3")
-Arabian Dotty Back (3")
-OC Clown Pair (3"/2")

took them out of DT over the last 2 weeks to give my tank some time to be fallow and be able to treat them all for ich

++added Cupramine to a tank for the 1st time in my life, going slow and watching it, I really am scared to mess this up and hurt any of my fish

How do they seem to be acting in the QT? Did you throw a few pvc pipes in there for some hiding areas? I bet the juvenile Imperator is stunning, would love to see some photos.

all getting along well thus far, I will try to get a pict for you, my photography skills are not the greatest

boy did I mess this up

boy did I mess this up

my big screw up... you think a guy (me) that designs machines and other items can get two rectangles correct, well no; lesson learned draw the side view also just to be sure, even on something as simple as two rectangles, very humbling I made my stand too wide for the tank, would of only had minimum amount supported on front and back panes, added in 3" wide stock so ok now but back to powder coat:mad2:

-now I will just make a 4" wide corian trim instead of 1.5" wide

-at least I got my stainless splash pan installed and checked to be sure I have no issues
