Giant carpet anemone (Stichodactyla gigantea)

I have been wanting one of these for a long time and found one that I could not pass on. This is a neon green with purple base baby gigantea carpet at only 3” in diameter.

I have had a 30 gallon quarantine tank that has been set-up for about 2 years and I have been done adding fish to my main display tank for some time. The intention for the tank is to house only the pair of clowns and the anemone to keep the bio-load low.

Tank stats:
- 30 gallon
- Sunpod 30” fixture with a 150 watt de and 12 led moonlights
- 60 pound of live rock established for over 3 years
- Aqua C Remora HOB skimmer
- 2 maxijet 1200 on opposite ends of tank facing one another and alternate cycles on a wave timer
- 100 watt heater on ranco controller
- HOB Aquaclear filter for running carbon
- Black & White Occy clown pair

Parameters:
- Calcium â€"œ 450ppm
- Alkalinity â€"œ 10 dkh
- Salinity - .025
- Temp â€"œ 78 degrees
- Nitrate, Phosphate, etc. â€"œ 0

I know these are tough to keep in captivity, but I am hoping to keep this guy healthy and watch him grow. I am planning on doing a 5 gallon water change weekly to make sure I keep the water as clean as possible. I will be monitoring the tank often in an effort to keep the environment as stable as possible. I know a 30 gallon tank is small, but I intend on setting up a larger shallow cube tank in the future if all goes well. I have been in the hobby for about 7 years and have had great success with haddoni carpets.

To start with, the anemone appears to be in perfect health. I plan up updating this thread with the progress as time goes on. Here are some initial pics:

DAY 1

During acclimation at 9:00am. Anemone was shipped out at 6pm from California and I picked it up the following morning at 9am from my local UPS.

After acclimation at 10:30am, he immediately stuck to a shelf on a piece of LR. No lighting on tank at this point.

At 12:00 noon when the halide came on.

Good luck. He seem healthy. I am trying to get one forever, but not able to find one.
I would love to get a small S. gigantea

looks great. Gigantea carpet nems are awesome. And they grow FAST. I have a tan color gigantea. When I got it, it was about 4-5in wide. In only about 2 months it has grown to about 16" wide and beautiful. My Ocellaris clowns love it!
Heres a pic of it when I first got it.

Good luck with youre nem. I jealous of the green color! That tank has a lot of potential!

Very nice gigantea. Best of luck with it. It looks healthy, and that is the key with this species--along with good husbandry and high volume water flow.

could to you tell us how you made that rockwork? really looks nice.

with the Gig. Of coarse good luck, it is looking great so far.

Day 3 Pic - Appears to be very happy. I have noticed that the tentacles have further extended.

looking good, in that pic he definitely looks more like a gigantea :)

Day 7 - First full week

The carpet continues to do very well. He appears to have growm already or is settling in nicely. He now expands to 4-5". I did a 5 gallon water change last night and swapped out 3 tbs of carbon. The clowns are still not showing much interest.

He is eating his second meal consisting a small mix of krill and mysis. He immediately grabs and closes up as soon the food touches his tentacles. I am feeding him with tweezers and he wanted to eat them too...very sticky!!!

It is really strange that the Black Ocellaris is not in it yet. S. gigantea is the natural host of A. ocellaris

The anemone continues to thrive and is doing well to date. I got rid of the black and white occy's and added 3 picasso clowns and 1 snowcasso. The snowcasso hosted right away and 2 of the picassos are competing for the second spot. I will be removing 2 of the picassos and adding them to another set-up. The anemone has grown about an inch since I last posted.

I did change the flow slightly. I had 2 maxijets at opposing sides of the tank that alternated on a wave timer. I read Rod's post on how his gigantea's thrive under his surge set-up. So for me to simulate a surge moved the maxijets to each corner on the back wall and have them both plugged (y-adapter) into one of the channel on the wave timer. Both pumps go on for 10 seconds, and then shut-off for 10 seconds, etc. The anemone seems to like this flow much better. It basically gets a break between the waves.

I will post some updated pics soon
