still confused to why i cant keep some sps

yeah ive tried high and low im so confused with montis they hate my tank

im adding the other light this week...

my 250's now are about 5 months old

no matter where i put them they die

its annoying cuz supposedly they are easy corals and they hate me

those rnt my pics clkwrk heres a pic of my tank u can see the lighting and my rock work

since this pic ive gotten rid of most of that colt coral but i still have one nice piece and then i still have that yellow finger leather ...

i also rearranged my rock to go a lil higher in places

I have the same issues. Acros are fine, can't keep montis. Orange digi will just turn kind of pinkish, then light pink, and slowly bleach out to white.

I dont think its a lighting issue (run xm10Ks)

leathers and SPS shouldnt be kept together unless your running alot of carbon 24/7.SPS will spend alot more energy fighting off the chemicals from these other corals rather than growing.

I had to give my leathers away before I started....Anyway keep us updated when you get those new bulbs in.

For digi's, monti's and the like you will be fine with your current lighting setup. Many people, including myself, run 20K and have no problems with growth or coloration.

I know that in my tank the Monti caps and Digi's dislike heavy flow. See if you can reposition them in your tank so they get a little less light.

Make sure you run carbon and preform weekly water changes.

Heres just a couple points of observation...I have witnessed in my own reef labratory.....

#1. Its better to keep monti'as low to midway with MH lighting....will lose color if in bright high lighting....but do require a bit of good lighting...I keep mine on the 'deep sandbed' bottom of my 180, under x3 250 radiums with x2 aquasuns, and x2 super actinics...and they glow awsome...had them under 14K hammys, and 14K coralvues and they did poorly with terrible color.....

#2. Once a coral has been given a certain property to live on , in your reef, its best to leave him be....moving a coral can cause more problems than its worth....

#3. Certain tangs WILL DEFINATLY pick profusly on all montipora species from dig's to caps, to danea's....I had to remove a orange shoulder tang, as well as a tinniti tang from reefs with monti species in them....the picking caused algea growth and the coral quickly went downhill....

#4. You can get away with a mixed softy reef...I do, have done it for years...BUT there is certain instances that danger will lurk in the future with this scenerio...(seen it)...Large sinularia (fingers)...large cladallia (colts),and large sarcophytons (toadstools)...do pollute your tank water with tons of toxins, that will long term damage, and inhibit growth on most sps.....
It is in my experience the monti family (at least in all 8 of my tanks) suffers the most from living in the same water as leather softies....Now like I said it can be done..I do it,...but run mega carbon 24/7 , like was already suggested from a respectable reefer...For the record, I rarely keep any sizable pieces of monti's with large quanitys softies in one closed system....now I do keep lots of small acro colonys in my softy systems...

Just my own observations...things do differ drastically in different peoples tanks, with many different varibles....

Just the Doc's 2 cent observation...

100% agree....I'm in the 20K club...and will never go back!

But I do recommend at least one if not two vho aquasun tubes ...will really help reach light to the areas shaded from just straight metal halide lamps....the URI's add a nice pink color into the mix of deep blue bulbs...
