stinky water

for some reason beyond me my water smells like the sewer. i have great water quality and my sps are very happy. but it smells like the sewer backed up. i have no sludge buildup, no rotting zombies, or body parts hidden anywhere. its in my bedroom which is somewhat annoying when i try to sleep and its even worse when i stick my head under the tank and smell the sump. i clean my skimmer every day so i know its not that . my macro is fresh and crunchy. any ideas

Look around and make sure something didn't crawl out. Or splash out.
Is any of your plumbing connected directly to a drain?

if the macro algae is slightly out of water or if you have a substantial amount of algae built up on sides of sump walls/dt then that tends to leave a nice ocean smell. sewer smell might mean that something has rotted and died or perhaps the skimmer skum has dripped/spilled. this happens omg it stinks like %&#(

I would check for a surface film everywhere in the system. They can be rather rank. Paper towels will remove them quickly, and getting a lot of surface agitation can prevent them. If that doesn't work, you could consider ramping up some activated carbon, to see whether the water itself is the source.

I agree that GAC is a good plan.

Does it smell like hydrogen sulfide (rotten eggs) or an ocean/seaweed type of smell?
