Stocking

I'm starting to think about stocking for my 12 gallon Nano Cube I'm going to get. The tank comes with $30 to liveaquaria.com, so some of it will be from there. I think it's safe to say that I know pretty much nothing about saltwater fish, inverts, etc. I was just at Markheim, and the guy told me six-lined wrasses, clowns, gobies, firefish, and maybe a dwarf angel were some of my options. I like the wrasse and clowns, but I have no clue how many I should put in. Also, what are my other options? I also need to know how much live rock to use, what inverts, and what corals are easy to take care of. The tank has 48 watts, so it has plenty of lighting.

Another big question is where should I get these from? And does anybody on here have something they want to get rid of that I could buy off of them?

Thanks in advance.

I would definantly say no to the angel, just not enough room. but the other stuff would be fine. Get a nice pair of Picasso clowns and a goby/pistol shrimp pair. As far as corals go stick with softies they usually will tolerate less light and are easier to take care of, but thats not saying that is all that you can keep. as far as inverts go maybe some kind of shrimp or two. really depends on what you like to look at. Just my 2cents.

IMO i would lean towards tiny ,nano sized fish. 12g NC is a very small tank. stuff like sexy shrimp and neon gobies would be much more appropiate. i'd chose maybe three small peacefull fish. roc ,buf, syc all have great stores. i know roc has some great deals on a yashi and flaming prawn gobies right now. liveaqaria is a great online dealer. i'd say go slow and have fun.

Well, the price on that tank went up, and they got rid of the free stand. So now I'm looking at a 14 gallon Oceanic Bio Cube from Markheim Pets. So, I will be buying only locally stock now.

Wrasses can get pretty aggressive, especially in a tight space. The picasso clowns and watchmans goby and pistol shrimp pair should be very entertaining inhabitants for a biocube.

Softies (mushrooms, zoas, ricordia, kenya trees) should do well in a system that size.

You should also check out A Reef Creation and Salt Water Paradise.

Specifically Picasso clowns, or will any do? I know maroons would be a bad choice, but are there any others that wouldn't work?

Picassos are a nice fish but Id wait to dump that much $ on a pair of clown for a 14 nano. ARC has a ton of different kinda of clown fish in all different sizes. You were right about the maroons, they big big and nasty. As Ben said, you could run into a probelm with a wrasses down the road. One of my favorite fish of all time was a fire fish.

Good luck on the tank, and welcome to URS!

Hi aj2494!!

Even if you decide to get your fish and tank locally, may I suggest you still go the Live Aquaria site, and under "Marine Fish" they have a section called "Nano Fish", which are good choices for smaller tanks.

They also have a section called "Beginner Fish" that might help too.

Irregardless of where you buy your fish, liveaquaria.com is a pretty good place to gather some info on what fish may be a good match for your tank.

Good Luck!!

a pair of percs really should have 25g or so. a 12 g nano is really less than ideal. it's not much different than a 5gallon bucket. you can do it,millions of people have this set up. i think with some thought you could have something unique and better suited for pod life.

To be honest, I just copied and pasted "Picasso clowns" from the above post and meant to change it. I just googled them and I'm not real wild about the Picasso clowns. Some very small perculas could be cool, but they will need more space as they grow. As noted, a better would be to stick with fish that make good long term residents in a nano system.

hehe never no love for the maroon clowns :) everyone says they are so mean, even though my pair have a nem they are hosting,my purple tang still punks them off on a regular basis..He's a bully lol

when researching stocking options don't conduct your research with online retail websites. Use credible information given from those not trying to sell you something. RC can be one such resource.

I had looked at liveaquaria, but since I am relatively experienced in freshwater, and never agreed with the tank size requirements, I was just shopping around.

With liveaquaria and freshwater fish, they always seem to over-estimate how much you need. I had bred fish in tanks that they said you couldn't even keep them in.

So I've been reading that true perculas and ocellaris are my only clown options. Is this true? If they would work, I was thinking I could get a pair, 1 or 2 gobies, pistol shrimp to match the gobies, some snails, a hermit crab or two, a couple sps or zoas, and 5 or 6 lbs of live rock. Sound good?
