Stolireef Reborn -- Rebuild Thread

Basically, all of the heavy lifting is done. The LuxCore ballasts arrived today and installed very easily. They run very quiet and cool. This weekend, I'll install the water change station which should be very easy and then basically I just have to wait for the cycle to complete. I'm thinking about Dr. Tim's but I'm not rushing.

The Ca reactor will be installed after the cycle is complete but the plumbing is already in place so that install should be a no-brainer.

Looks great!

Thanks. It's starting to get fun again. The before and after shots look funnier in Tapatalk than they do on the website because they appear consecutively rather than as thumbnails.

The cycle appears to be progressing nicely, if slowly. I'm now reading about 1.5ppm Ammonia and about 1ppm Nitrite.

Looks like I'm about 1/2 way through the cycle. Pulled the coctail shimp last night and today, ammo at zero. Nitrites high. Put a new piece of shrimp in to keep things going.

BTW, rotten shrimp smells awful.

Ammonia and Nitrite have tested 0 for two days. Nitrate up to about 20-30 PPM. Doing a water change today and will test again tomorrow. Looks like the basic cycle is now complete. Time to add a fish and a small CUC. Very exciting!

Turned on the skimmer for the first time this afternoon. Produced right out of the gate. Nothing like freshly cleaned equipment.

Will do a 20 gallon water change (and maybe a second one) to start bringing down the nitrates. Almost there....

Just added my first fish to the tank. It's a yellow coris wrasse that was held by Ryan for the past few months while I completed my build. Thanks to Ryan for holding him and keeping him healthy. Also, thanks for going 'wrasse fishing' with me this afternoon.

As soon as he comes out of hiding, I'll try to snap a shot of him.

Stopped by SW Aquaculture today to pick up my first small CUC. What a great store. I also stopped by The Aquarius and picked up a piece of live rock and some Chaeto. As always, Carlos had a great selection.

I really exercised buyer's restraint and will power today.

Noticing a small microalgae bloom in the water column. I'm hoping that at the six week mark, the tank will be ready for corals.

She actually was a standard poodle. Her name was Stoli hence my screen name. She loved my first tank. We now have an old English sheepdog named Bentley and a labradoodle named Roxie. She looks exactly like a waterdog.

Over the last three days, I noticed a bit of microalgae blooming in the water column. Water looked a bit cloudy. Today, crystal clear and skimmer is chugging along. I'm fully expecting a diatom and cyano bloom at some point (although it would be nice to avoid that altogether). I'll try to same patient approach.

If I've learned nothing else in this hobby, it's patience. I didn't panic when I saw the cloudiness and just let the tank find its way home. The result is hopefully an even stronger bacterial population. I'm probably ready for a coral now but I'm going to stick with my six week schedule. First corals should go in around the second week in May.

sooooooo true, nothing good happens quickly in this business, I often tell myself to slow down when I'm working on the tank and I won't start working on it in the late afternoon or evening when time is short
