When you install a bulkhead do you put the rubber washer on top of the glass or underneath with the nut.

I've been told both ways, but here is my theory....

I don't want any water getting outside the tank, so I put the rubber washer inside the tank to stop the water leaving the tank.

Yea I'm glad he ask.

Yea I'm glad he ask.

I sure am glad you ask that stupid question...now I don't have to ask that stupid question next week. I was just trying to decide who to ask

...and make sure the glass, gasket and flange are clean. Amazing what a mess a few grains of sand can make...

+1 I've also known of a few folks that even smear a thin coat of silicone on both sides of the gasket before installing it, makes it a much tighter seal, but should not be TOO hard to remove later if needed.

I wiped the glass down with alcohol.

I would go with at least 80 proof. My personal favorite is vodka (Never from a plastic bottle!), or at least a good shiraz if you are in the wine mood. I try to stay away from the patron though, as there is nothing worse than drunk fish with attitudes.

Ok, my work is done here.

Rubbing alcohol is good - evaporates and leaves no residue. :clown:

Bulkhead manufacturers suggest against using silicone. If the gasket is in good condition, it won't be necessary.

Save vodka for dosing the tank... :bounce3:\

Sounds like those big tomato clowns you see turned in at LFS because they have terrorized the tank and owner...
