Storage containers

I've been using a 20g rubbermaid trash barrel for a while now but I'm wondering this is a bad idea. I've read about people using brute and it's got me thinking of why. Should I use the brute brand or can I stick with the one I have? Mostly this is for water changes. I usually like to keep it filled and mixing as a just in case. Thanks

I think the general idea with Rubbermaid containers is that if it's gray, yellow or white, then it's okay. Other colors have certain chemicals & lacquers that can poison the water. I may be mistaken though... hopefully someone can clarify that.

Hmm. I'll have to check the number when I get home.. It is a black trash barrel. I hope someone can chime in with a definite of which numbers /colors would be ok..

The brute cans are stronger. i have 44 gallon one and it is fine but a lot of larger cans can't hold pressure from being filled with water. That is the main concern. Don't want 40 gallons of water on my basement floor.

I had a larger brute (with wheels) and when over half full the sides would bulge way out. Actually got so top heavy that it fell over when I first left the RODI on overnight. It was only a little over half full because I was was checking on it every few hours (first time wasn't sure about fill rate). Don't get one with the wheels no matter what- just make it top heavy and topple.

May be too big, but I upgraded to the food grade storage containers (the blue ones-55gal) and those are awesome. Very thick and solid, got them on craigslist for $25- just made the teenager get in and clean it out with vinegar. Obvviously double check what they were used for first (soda on mine).
