Stored Saltwater - Need a powerhead?

Hi,

For over a year, I have been mixing and storing saltwater for water changes in a 30 g Brute trash can. I have kept a heater in the can as well as a Maxijet 1200 power head going in it 24-7. I also keep the trash can lid on.

The maxijet was pretty old and finally died.

Before I get a new one, is it really necessary to run the powerhead in the can?

Thought I remember reading that you should, but not sure.

Thanks,
John

I definitely would.

When I first started, I had a 44g brute filled to the brim w/ salt water for curing. The can was new/clean, and I used RO water. I used only an mj900. After about a week, the water had become gunky and alot of minerals had settled into this cake type crud.

I asked a buddy and he said the same happened to him, so I wasn't crazy.

Now I just keep the amount I need for a water change, with two huge powerheads in it. I only leave it for 2 weeks or so. The increased aggitation seems to be the trick.

JME.

yes. and use the venturi adapter if it comes with it. keep the surface agitated and all of it highly oxygenated. the powerhead just keeps the minerals from settling out of the water column.
