Storing Salt Water

How long can mixed saltwater be stored? And what do you store it in?

I will be gone for six weeks this winter from the end of January to the beginning of March. What I would like to be able to do is to have my neighbor, do about three 5 gallon water changes during that time. He's very sharp, and has taken car of my aquarium for extended periods for several years. I have not had SPS before, and so we have not worried about making water changes. I still don't have much SPS, but I hope that the frags I got from Cagri will become wonderful colonies.

If I made up three five gallon buckets of saltwater, would they be fine just sitting for six weeks? Or I guess I would only need two, and I could do the last water change myself when I get home. So will it last a month just sitting like that?

I am sure there will be more educated answers but I would think so. Is there anyway to put a powerhead in each container? This may not be cost effective but will ensure that the water mixed up a bit. If not, I would think it would be fine. I'll be interested in hearing others opinions.

And you have a cool neighbor to come over and help you with water changes while you're gone! That's nice!

I suppose I could always have him put the powerhead in the bucket the day or so before the water change.

You're right! I have awesome neighbors. I have had the good fortune of having at least one good neighbor for the last 33 years. When one moves or passes away, another great person keeps moving into the neighborhood. Gotta love it.

I would think as long as it's in covered containers, it should be ok. I always have mine heated to the tank temp and have a powerhead in there as well.

pre-measure the salt, per bucket, and just fill and seal the 5 gallon buckets. Leave him labled and dated salt bags. Just hope that the other neighbor dosnt think that your slingin dope!!! haha
