Storing Saltwater

What are everyone's thoughts about storing Saltwater?

Before I moved I had a 300 gallon with filtration plumbed thru the wall. I spent close to 7k just on equipment, with 1200 on apex alone. So I had the apex do my water changes for me out of a brute that a mixed three days before the automated change.

Times have changed and I've moved to a more expensive part of the country and downsized a bit. No I didn't skimp 😁. But I'm curious. I have space restrictions now but have enough room to build another shelf for my saltwater storage on top of my RODI. In a 55 gallon brute, doing 10-15% weekly, how long can one store it, topping it off every week, or just mixing a new 55 gal worth once depleted? I have a custom 71.4 gal with 30 gal sump. All starphire 😁

Thank you!

I dont have all the automation set up that you do, but I do keep a 45 gallon brute with rodi water, and a 45 gallon brute with saltwater. I have about 100 gallons of volume in my display tank and I do 5% weekly water changes, so that 45 gallon brute lasts me about a month before its depleted and I have to refill.

My tanks been set up for a year and I havent seen any negative effects from what I can tell. I just keep lids on both containers to limit evaporation and keep water moving with a couple powerheads.

As long as there is surface agitation and decent flow there shouldn't be an issue storing it for long periods.

If there are no organics it can be stored indefinitely with no aeration or mixing. If there are organics bacteria can cause issues over time with out aeration.

I store NSW on a 55g container with nothing in it for a month as that's how long it takes for it to deplete doing auto water change. I have kept NSW in one before for up to 6 months with no agitation and had 0 issues. You might want to check with the salt that you use though as the new stuff that is coming out especially the probiotic stuff it says that you have to use within a day or it will precipitate.
