my peacock, which i just acquired, likes to lie on its back in the sand in a semi curled position, grooming itself, or just simply lying there. is this normal?
Here is what is happening. The manis is curling up in a "defensive" position. My mantis does this all the time in his cave and he is fine. I dont know what to do to stop it but I dont think it harms them. Grooming is also a normal process. Give it a rock or two with caves so he can hide and he'll be happy!
thanks. unfortunately he likes to burrow into the sand below the intake part of the eclipse system. as of now he is ignoring a coupla nice pieces of live rock. i even built it into a cave! i guess he's just nervous.
As far as feeding goes..there are tons of stuff you can feed them. Here are a few.
Frozen krill
frozen brine shrimp cubes (my mantis loves these)
most frozen fish available at your pet store
Here are a few of the "hard" foods that will give your mantis a chance to use it's raptorial appendages.
Live freshwater Fiddler Crabs (found them at a pet store near me)
Small Turbo snails (mine only ate 1 then never ate them again)
small bait crawdads (my friend suggested these to me since he feeds his octopus them)
ive had 2 mantis die after doing what you just described. mine where curled up and fanning with there swimmerets. mine seemed to be in shock and wouldnt follow my movements with its eyes when i waved food around its face. they died shortly after.
hope its not the same thing! good luck
did you do a water change just before the problem started?
yes i did do a water change right before this happened. but i think he is just resting. he usually grooms himself while curling up on his back, and when a damsel swims by he flares up at it.
will try feeding frozen cube food...brine, krill, and fiddlers (how long can a fw fiddler survive in SW)
Both my friend and I feed our carnivorous pets fiddlers and they have been known to keep in an aquarium for days at a time. The only problem is that they are excelent escape artists and they can get out of the aquarium if not watched or killed by the Mantis, octopus, etc. Hope that helps.
