Roger,

Can the controllable streams be used in an on/off type of cycle using a third party controller such as Aquatronica? If so, am I correct in assuming that I don't need the Tunze controller?

No, the Tunze controller enables speed control and does many more features than any other controller on the market. Other controllers will void the warranty and while it may work OK on a 6000, 6100 or 6200, most of the features you paid for will not be accessible. On a 6060 or 6080 it will not work at all for very long as these pumps are not built to handle off and on operation.
