I spent some time redirecting my powerheads tonight, and while I was at it, I smoothed out my shallow sand with a long rake. It all took maybe 20 minutes. I turned off the powerheads while I was working, but not the return pump.
My new McCosker's flasher wrasse just hovered watching, and after I turned the flow back on, he swam around checking out water-borne sand to see if it was food. Then he went under an arch in my rock, and just hovered in there for a bit. I figured he was stressed, so I dimmed the lights. Then he lay on the sand for a bit on his belly, and I turned all the lights out except for dim room lights. After that, he briefly turning on his side on the sand and arched his body before slowly swimming up and perching in the rock under the arch.
I doubt I stirred up any gases in the sand, as the tank is pretty new and the sand was constantly moving around.
What did I do??? I hope I haven't done him in!
