Stung

For all those that dont look in the general marine forum....
Well heres another one i can add to the collection!!
I was stung today at work by a 4-5 inch antennata lion. WOW.
I have been stung and chewed on by a lot of things including stung by an emperor scorpion and bitten by a large angry pine snake.
This was a different ball game. Emperor scorpions are supposed to be like 4 or 5 bee stings, well ive never been stung by a bee but it was probably four or five times worse than an emperor scorpion sting and a lot more localized, rather than my whole hand swelling up it went rather red and only three fingers swelled and the top half of my hand.

The only thing to do aparantly is submerge your hand in water as hot as you can take it, i did this for about 2 hours and after the first hour most of the pain had gone, but the numbness still remains now. Luckily i had read up before on this and Hannah contacted a friend at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, they said basically the same, unless the finger was to swell large enough that it literally will pop (this is possible) there is no point in going to hospital or anything because all they would do is drain and inject you with anti-histamines.
Quite freaky and bizzare how it happened. Totally my fault, was feeding a tiny snowflake eel a soaked lancefish and the lion was obviously hiding at the front under the lip of the tank, as soon as i put the lancefish in the water the lion swam forward, jumped out of the water and took the lancefish, and stinging me on the right index finger with the second dorsal spine.

that sucks, i have many almosts but never act. stung by a lion.

lucky you weren't allergic or had some weird reaction.

Ouch! Glad you already knew the first aid steps for lionfish stings  Just keep an eye out for infection, something that is quite possible after getting jabbed with a fish slime covered spine.

As Bill mentioned, watch out for infection. It's also a good idea to get it checked by a doc mainly to look for pieces of the spine. If there's a little chunk of the spine in there, your odds of getting an infection skyrocket.
Also, if it's my hand, I want to be on prophylactic antibiotics anyway, rather than waiting for an infection.

They are that sharp huh? I don't own one and one of the reasons is that I don't want to get stung. I'm not careful enough.

I also was stung once, and it was also my fault. I was cleaning my tank, and didn't see him hiding near a rock - which I tried to pick up. He stung me as soon as I touched him.

All my SW books said the same thing, heat. Anything from hot water to using a hair dryer. The intense pain lasted about 2 hours, it was sore for about 2 days.

I am glad to see that you are OK. A good reminder for all of the lionfish owners out there to be extra careful.

I have a foxface rabbitfish, no lion yet. I wonder if his sting would be close to a lion's. I sure hope not, as I have had many close encounters with him already.

I have been stung by my Blue Spotted Rabbitfish and its pretty bad. It was very, very painful for about an hour. Much worse than a bee sting.

By the next day it was fine though.

Got nailed by a foxface once, on par with a wasp sting. So not bad, but not something I'd recommend either :D

i've been stung by volitans and dwarfs, but never worse than just localized burning for about 45 minutes or so. actually hurt worse yesterday unloading bta's when one got me right where I had pulled off a hangnail :(

Ouch That Hand Looks Bad I would Definitely use a Feeder Stick in the Future.I have Been Bitten By My SnowFlake Eel and That Hurt But Your Hand Looks Nasty. This is a Fish Tail to Tell People Now:eek2: Be Careful Pal.
