stupid fish deaths

Last week my beautiful naso decided to eat some sand and two minutes later choked to death. This week one of my yellow tangs somehow got stuck between rocks and died. Man I got some bad luck

How long were they in the tank for? My fish eat sand all day and disgard it through their gills filtering out the food...very wierd

Sorry to hear that. My hippo got itself stuck in a piece of rock really good during the tank transfer as well. Hubby had to break that last piece on the bottom of bin to get it out.

I have had the yellow tang for 3 yrs and the naso for two. Both were fat and healthy. The yellow tang was the bigger of the two yellows i have so he would chase the other one around I think he got carried away today The reason i say the naso choked to death was he was fine then i saw him take a gulp of sand like my whiteface tang. I was like thats weird he never eats the sand. Then two minutes later he was on his side on the sand. I scooped him out and looked down his mouth and saw it was full of sand.

I have heard that this sand eating behavior is common with foxface lo that have been in captivity for quite some time.

i had a YWG who jumped in the back chamber of my biocube, somehow, he made his burrow out of spacing where plastic meets glass in the back. he lived there for 3 demolished by my starry blenny who tore him apart. i was watching TV when i witnissed this. my reaction was like "WHAT, HES ALIVE!" than "nevermind...". that was one unlucky fish

Ok guys lets hope somebody can help
I have a white face tang around six months, around 7 inches extremely fat. Today it started to do vertical circles. Like a car doing doughnuts but vertical. It does not have any sign of disease had perfect body until it went crazy with the circles and crashed into some rocks.

Thanks

That circling spunds like some toxicity or atypical enviromental issues (electrical current?)

Regarding the other fish, the causes of death also sound very unusal, to the point of being unbelieveable. I highly doubt a healthy NAso would "choke" on sand. And crafty reef fish like Yellow tang dont get "Stuck" in the rocks without a rock collapse. I am not saying the events didnt occur, Im just saying theyre not the cuaase of death. All three of the fish exhibiting unbelievable symptoms leads me to definitely conclude there is something diagnostically wrong with the water. As you say there is no real problem in their condition and appearance, I am going to stay with toxicity in the water. Any recent construction/chemicals/activity near the tank? Could something ahve been used in the tank that shouldnt have? I recall a similar story, and the tank owner eveentually found batteries in the sumop that his child had been placing there. I would suggest starting with a significant water change, and run carbon.

I will do a 50 gallon water change. I always run carbon on my systems around 2 liters worth. I am very puzzled and do not know whats going on but I know the naso choked to death. I was standing in front of the tank when it happened it was the strangest thing. It died in 2 minutes after eating the sand.
Thanks

I dont mean to sound argumentative or anything, but how does a fish "choke" to death? They, quite obviously have gills, rather than lungs, so a blockage of the esophagus would not impair a fish, as it would would a person choking on something stuck in the throat. I dont understand how ingesting sand could cause an immediate death. Understand, Im not necessarily looking for an explanation, but instead just suggesting we look past this apparnt concern. Good luck.

I agree with you something is going on with your water. Its so hard to say what exactly is happening and your thoughts about stray voltage may be a place to check.I am assuming since you didnt mention it that there are no new additions to your tank?I think at this point the 3rd healthy long term fish in your tank is to weird to be coincidence.I wish the best luck figuring out what is wrong.

Yes I am very puzzled too. I can't think of another reason though. I saw him go to the floor and took a gulp of sand. Then the next 30 seconds he was not right he went to the floor and started gasping. Within two minutes he was gone. I scooped him out and looked at his body for any signs of disease and then I opened his mouth and saw the sand was stuck in there. I can't think of any other reason. Maybe I am wrong
I don't see it as aruging I know you are just trying to help me figure out the problem

I don't think its stray voltage because i never get socked when reaching in the tank. Also have a grounding plug for stray voltage
Thanks
