stupid PVC ?

i realize this is pretty stupid, but please forgive my ignorance. i am working on an overflow and sump and need to use PVC. my LFS said regular PVC primer and cement is safe. is this true??
the setup will be for getting water from the overflow into the sump (tidepool II that a buddy gave me years back and all the extra parts got misplaced over a series of moves). if regular PVC primer and cement are not safe, what is the best way to seal/adhere PVC tubes/elbows/connectors?

thanks everyone.

Regular cement and primer is safe.
I suggest you use the clear, as opposed to the purple, primer, makes for a nicer job.

PVC primer and cement

PVC primer and cement

but the purple primer won't hurt anything right? this is all going under the tank in the stand so it won't be seen.
i primed and sealed all the pieces last night and left it outside to dry for a few hours and then put it in the laundry room overnight. just wanted to make sure this stuff is fish-keeping safe (doing a FOWLR tank) before i hook everything up for a wet-test run tonight.

thanks-

thank you highlander and dkh0331.
i had worked with PVC at a FS years back but could not for the life of me remember what we used to seal the pieces together. i'll do a test run with my overflow/sump tonight using a large rubbermaid bin and some buckets to make sure there's no leaks in the plumbing and so i can get an idea of the flow in and out of the sump (so i don't flood my house).

thanks fellow RC members.
