I'm looking at the 2 part dosing and recipe #1 for part 3A requires Mag Flakes(magnesium chloride hexahydrate). What is everyone using for a replacement for that? I prefer something local.

Oh, nevermind. i answered my own question. Why would most people use this over the DIY 2 part? Seems this is a much more costly option. Is there something that i'm missing here?

Supposedly there are potential contamination issues with the DOW stuff (according to DOW, although I don't think many hobbyists have seen issues). The BRS stuff is more expensive than DOW, for sure, but personally I like knowing that its more pure than other things and is still cheaper than most other supplements.

Ok, i understand. I know a few years ago seemed like everyone was doing the DIY 2 part. I guess since I am just now crawling out from under this rock, this is all news to me.

have you gone over to the chemistry forums?

No i was reading the article about the DIY 2 part and seen that the mag flake is no longer recommended. That's why i was asking what replaced it.

I am slowly getting caught back up, but Im sure ill have some more dumb questions as i go.

I know the feeling.. I was so stuck in my old tank that I am learning a ton now.. so way behind.

check out the chem forums. I am sure your answer lies there. I have thought about making my own but know I would likely screw it up.

It's all about purity, The Major Mfg has changed the purity of the base product that now contains much higher levels of Boron along with other bad Items. So cheap may be deadly in the long run.

Well that makes since, i just don't want a tag like Pickupmann66 "My hobby broke Me". I think i will just conform to what everyone else is doing. Cause loosing a tank in the long run is a lot more costly then a few bucks more now.

thanks Cloud9! I represent that remark. didnt say which hobby. there is that boat that sits in the driveway...

maybe I need to change that though....

Yea, my poor fishing boat has been sitting in my garage for almost 6 months now. :( and i am thinking its gonna be another 6 months since i am spending all my money on this hobby.

HAHA! well, the weather is nice so as soon as I get home (provided I can get outa chicago) im going to the lake tomorrow.

I went fishing yesterday. Little cold on the water but not too bad.

Me and my neighbor each caught a ~5lb largemouth... so not too bad of a day since we only stayed out about 3 hours.

if you were on priest, I am jealous. I miss that place. I knew it Very very well. I am terrible on Tims. we went out for a few hours and just wet a line. nothing doing.

Yup... We put in around where the east and west forks come together and work that part of the river/lake.

Now, back to your regularly scheduled thread :)

Ok... one more O/T
