What is a substitute for Lugol's Iodine for dipping of zoos to get rid of nudibranchs...besides salifert's fwe (there isn't a venue where I can purchase fwe anywhere near here.)...I can't find Lugol's near here either...I'm looking for somethign I can pick up at walmart pharmacy section or something.

Seachem's Reef Dip is an iodine based dip that claims to disinfect corals and other inverts from parasitic infections. I've never used the product myself but every Seachem product I've ever used has never disappointed me and I doubt that this would be any different. I believe Kent also makes a similar dipping product.

Lugols isn't very effective for zoanthid eating nudis IME and I believe that's why he's asking for something besides Lugol's. Zach, look at the other thread you made on Zoanthid dips, alternatives were discussed there...

Well, I think the only other thing I saw in the previous thread was potassium permanganate...which everyone says is a little iffy. What I'm looking for is the same iodine as lugol's...but a different brand name or somthing.....we just don't have Lugol's brand or salifert fwe exit anywhere around here...and I don't want to use the potassium permanganate.

Lugol's isn't a brand of iodine, it's a type of iodine... If you can't find FWE or Lugol's near you why not just order it online? FYI, Lugol's is only mildly effective at killing nudis and anything that outright kills a nudi is going to be at least a little iffy with corals.

potassium permanganate? Wow. That's what I use to shock my spa.

Angela

Yep, it's been used in aquariums for years under different names. If anyone remembers Redox + from Thiel that was simply potassium permanganate. Very VERY expensive potassium permanganate.

We use Potassium Permanganate (KMNO4) as a pretreatment for algae and to oxidize metals for the water plant. Got pallets of it. Wonder if they would miss a 50# container? Nasty stuff though. It'll eat your skin, turning it brown. Wear gloves and a mask to handle it.

Hey Zach,

You got the answer a line or two up. Go to the pharmacy and ask for Lugols Iodine. They will have it.

or

Why not just order some Lugols and FWE from any of the online sites.

Shipping costs for a 2oz bottle of lugol's is what I'm trying to avoid.

lugol's is a common item at the pharmacy, just ask the pharmacist for it
