Substrate for Wrasses

Looking for recommendations on substrate for my upgrade that's around the corner. What size should I use to give the wrasse (leopard sp. and tamarin sp.) the proper bed to bury in without cutting them. Also, anybody out there that knows the pros and cons of using black sand? Lastly, is there such thing as too fine of sand/substrate?

I use the coarse sand (one grade up form the sugar-sized, oolitic sand). Leopard and dusky wrasses seem fine with it, and my vortechs don't pick it up.

Anything somewhat fine should do; you just don't want anything large or things with sharp edges. It definitely doesn't need to be sugar-sized sand by any means; 2-3mm would suffice.

Black sand tends not to look visually sharp for very long; detritus can easily make it appear dirty.

Too fine is only a problem in a high flow tank, like an SPS tank. Constant sand-storms suck. :)
