is this a good sand for a 40 breeder reef? i think im going to mix in about 10 lbs of crushed coral. will this be good or should i get more sand?

CaribSea Aragamax Sugar-Sized Sand 30 lb Information

Aragamax Sugar-Sized Sand: 0.2 - 1.2mm diameter grain size. Also known as "oolitic sand," this grade is ideal for shallower bedsallowing dentrification in little 1"depth. The fine can pass easily through gills of gobys and other sand-sifting organisms. smooth round grains are gentle to soft bellied sharks rays. White color metal freeno ash or silica.

CaribSea Aragonite buffers to the highest pH and delivers more calcium, carbonate, and trace elements than any other substrate. Little or no rinsing required, aragonite keeps aquariums healthier,

I use the oolictic sand in my display tanks and have for 5
+years. It works fine and looks good to my eye but does blow around a bit which can be overcome by tinkering with the flow patterns. You don't need more than an ich or so with a few pools here and there of several inches for animals that need it deeper, like certain wrasses. I'd personally, not use crushed coral as it can accumulate detritus.

ok my sand bed is abt 3/4 of an inch so im going to get another 30lb bag. im seeding it with sand from my 29gallon tank so i dont need live sand.

I think

I think

before responding to whether or not a substrate is "good or not" we should know what purpose it will serve (if any) and what the display will contain.

For example: CaribSea Aragamax Sugar-Sized Sand is a great choice for a denitrifying DSB but a terrible choice for jawfish.

For SPS go barebottom- no sand.... or very little.

You'll never get me to recommend "live bagged sand" :)

i will have these fish and corals

Royal Gramma Basslet (Gramma loreto)
Flame Angelfish (Centropyge loriculus)
Firefish, Purple (Nemateleotris decora)
Starry Blenny (Salarias ramosus)
Kaudern's Cardinal (Pterapogon kauderni) tank breed
Sunrise Dottyback

brains
trumpet
doughnut
hammer
torch
zoas
Green Fluorescent Mushroom

and why is it bad for a jawfish?

jaws need larger rubble to construct burrow. Sugar fine alone won't cut it.

For your list you could probably get away with any type of substrate.

ok i have a jawfish in a 29 with the same sand with abt 3lbs of crushed coral. hes made abt 6 burrows and all of them are under my live rock.

can i add sand after i have fish in the tank or will it hurt them?
