Subwoofer under fish tank

Does anyone have a strong sub in the same room as a fish tank? It may not be underneath, but nearby? As low freq seems to affect the whole room, i wonder what the affects of it are....

have 2 10inch subs about 7ft from my 40 tall FW. Has bin there for about 4 1/2years now no problems.

My power amp is rated at 5*250, running full range tower speakers and a Velodyne sub, and have run my system at full Dolby reference volumes and never had any issues with my tanks in the same room. At my old place my main right speaker was right next to the tank -- was fine.

Honestly, I would be more worried about the sub -- from any leaks -- then I would be about the tank.

2 help you put your mind at ease. everyday i go out, and come home i am blasting 2 15in subs out my car they are rated at 1000 rms each. 2ft from my car is a 60gal glass tank, have bin doing this for the last 3yrs and the tank and inhabitants are unaffected. (but they seem to hate it when i open the garage door tho, weird)

its fine

insulate the sub/under the tank, to force all virbration/sound out of the cabinet.

usually hte car audio stores sell the insulating material, I would run that below the tank, not to prevent from breaking [your windows and T5s/MH would explode first.] but to force the sound out. lowering vibration for fish ...

PS. there is alot of vibration noise in oceans, no ?

good idea on the insulation. I'll get some dynamat or whatever is a good alternative.

I'll test it out and see how it works. It's really not the best placement and the sound is not going to be that great, but i'm working with what i got... the tank was suppose to go in a different area, but after opening up a wall, this was the only place i could put it.

I have 3 speakers under the cabinet, right by the sump ...
my PH probe is effected by it .. but that's about it.

if you read books from Masaru Emoto, and believe in his work, which I dont, the vibration could help the water too !lol

you can always monitor how the fish are doing once the tank is filed up too .. it MIGHT send fish hidding, thinking the vibration is a big predator .. could have cool results !

A lot of people in this thread need to learn how to answer a question without attacking the OP. thank you todd, this is my only complaint with this forum

since you live in Los Angeles, head downtown to central and 11st. that hole block is dedicated to car audio, and DJ equipment. they would have insulation at wholesale prices (at least cheaper than from online or regular retailer)

Can't make a blanket statement like that. In some cases it will cause issues, and standing waves, but in other cases it can/will vastly improve the performance.

+1 we don't even know the layout of the rest of the room, so only he can know the best place to put it

Ok, now I am truly curious as to the right answer here.

Let's forget about shattering the tank with ultra-low frequencies. We've established that it's not going to happen. You'll likely blow your eardrums first.

We've established that the biggest risk is dripping water on the sub, or, heaven forbid, an actual flow of water. I have a 12" Velodyne, and that sucker ain't cheap. OP seems to be willing to take that risk. Maybe custom design a waterproof cabinet that channels any water away or something.

How about livestock? I know my Naso turns pale and develops leopard spots with any loud noise on the cabinet, and all the fish scurry for cover. Coral? Polyp extension? Zoas closing up? I don't know, since my tank is down in a nicely soundproof basement, and my entertainment room is upstairs. What I do know is I am a Sci-Fi and action movie buff, and I've rattled things off shelves and collapsed folding tables when I get a little carried away :). What do the people who actually have a coral reef tank in a LOUD entertainment area think?

I have had things rattle off of my Velodyne, which (( at the time )) was less then 7 feet away from my 58. Didn't notice any reaction from the fish, corals, shrimps, etc. The only thing that happened is the fish thought they were going to be fed when I got up to pick the album cleaning brush off the floor.

I wouldn't know if it affects my fish or not. My system gets really really loud, but it was also really really expensive so I keep it far far away from the salt water.

if my tank sprung a leak, the sub is the least of my worries... lol... the entertainment unit is holding a receiver, ps3, directv, wifi, sub, plus my flooring would be the biggest issue...

the cost of building a tank....

all the plumbing goes to a small room on my patio, so the only thing inside the house is just the tank.

Exactly ... leak should be last in mind ... if my tank leaks, my condo will sue me for millions LOL I would NOT care for my TV or sound system ...

<a href="http://www.lab.upc.es/frontiers/Andre_etAl_Frontiers_Cephalopods-2011.pdf">Low-frequency sounds induce acoustic trauma in cephalopods</a>

there are alot of papers regarding this out there ... mostly about whales and ships though .. I will see if I can find anything more related !

interesting topic for sure

i just came home with my 2 15inch kicker cvx's powered to about 60%, and the only thing my fish did was beg for food.

It's not the catastrophic leak, but all the little drips and splashes that i wouldn't want around all the electronics.
