65g Ritteri Tank
anybody out there use only T5 lighting and have had success with clams?...if you do, please say how much lighting you have and how deep the clams are from the lights.

i have one now and just ordered 2 more, i have a 90g with 2 4bulb t5s, 4 actinic, 3 10k and 1 18k, the 18k was only one i bought that didnt come with light, and i have one reflector for each light, not individual reflectors. My lights are about 5 inches above the water and clam is about 8 inches below the water, has been fully open since i put it in, so far so good.

Different species have different lighting needs. Derasas, squamosas and gigas can all easily be kept under T5s. Croceas/maximas can as well, but you need to have a good lighting system with individual reflectors and the clams should be somewhat close to the light. I believe croceas require the most light (I'm basing that on where I've seen croceas and maximas living in nature, croceas are always in shallower water).

i have a crocea and dont have individual reflectors on my t5s, but like i said i have 8 bulbs and i keep him about 10 inches total below the light, so figure out the light you want or figure out the clam you want and get a light good enough for it

Mines is a ultra gold maxima. Lighting is 4 (4x54 Watt Nova Extreme-no individual reflectors about two inches above water. The clam is about 5 inches below the water line. It's doing well.

i've got a 5 inch derasa and a 6 inch teardrop maxima on the sand bed in my 75. lighting over it is an 8 bulb t-5 with individual reflectors for 432 watts. light is approx 10 inches from surface of water so clams are about 30 inches away. derasa has been in there since january 09, maxima since september 08

heres mine under t5s

I have 4 clams in my 180 (2 are brand new, so let's not even talk about them ;).

I've had my Maxima since October 07. Got it when it was 2". Here it is now, about 4.5")

My Crocea was originally placed in the rocks, but it decided to jump into the sandbed and grab a hold of the bottom of the tank, so I left it there. I picked that one up in October 08, when it was about 2.5". It's now 4", and doing well. (Sorry, I don't have a picture of that one.)

My lighting consists of 8 X 80 Watts T5s, Tek Light Ready Fit Retros. Non of the bulbs are overdriven. :)

Here's a quick (bad) picture of one of my new clams, a 2" Maxima, which I only picked up Monday.

6 Clams under T5s Max, Crocea, Deresa, gigas, and squamosa. All doing fine for almost 2 years now. Growing well and no issues whatsoever.

I have 6 T5s, its an Aquactinic fixture on a 180G tank. All sps, lps, softies and clams ALL thrive in my tank without any issues. Great polyp extension and color.

Here are a couple of clams in my tank, these are all Maximas.

This is very encouraging!
I don't have a clam ... yet, but I have T5's and would love to get one in the future

This might be a question that may not be able to be answered. I used to have a clam with my old metal halide setup, and the colors on the clam would look metallic like it was reflecting back at the glass, like it looks when you look from the top down. With t-5 can you angle the clam right to get the same metallic look from the clams?

The short answer is that evidence indicates that there is nothing you can keep under MH that you cannot keep under T5 provided it is setup for maximum power (balance of bulbs, good individual reflectors, enough wattage etc).
