i wake up to find all 3 anthias i bought last week dead! in one night you say. pretty weird! dont even go there saying water quality - i think it might have been the yellow tang? freaked if i know - but $75.00 worth of fish down the tubes...... sucks! poor little guys

That sucks dude!

Don't think it was the tang. They can be nasty at times, but rarely kill unless in defense and then you would see the slash marks from their tail barbs.

You may have to play CSI Orlando here. Any marks on the bodies? Any strange behavior? Were they in QT? Any other tank inhabitants besides the tang?

one of them actually did have a hole in the head - that what made me think that it might have been him - snails got to the other two before i got there - well most of the way

thanks val - i hate for little fish to die like that - i am going to take the yellow tang outta there and try 1 again. - it sucks cause if hair algae comes back i am not going to have anything to control it. i know what people say about it growing because of condition - but i believe if you have it, it is going to grow

I had a similiar issue. I had a male and and 2 or 3 females a few months ago that I bought. All of a sudden after 3 weeks, they were all gone. I'm not sure why as I did feed them but I don't think I'll try them again. Sucks as they aren't cheap either to do a nice school of them.

Yellow tangs can sometimes be aggressive towards newcomers. Sorry for your loss. Any chance there is a mantis shrimp? What kind of anthias?

Mantis was the other thing that came to mind. Hear any tapping sounds at night?

When you add the new fish after QT, keep the lights off for a few hours or try rearranging a few of the rocks. That resets the territory boundries and makes adding newcomers easier.

Have read a few theories that fish can actually see color and when they see a fish of similiar size, shape and color, they see it as a competition for their food source. May not be true, but sounds good.

Tangs usually won't touch hair algae. Best way to get rid of that is nutrient control (nitrates, phosphates, silicates) through regular water changes and filtration.

Hope this helps.

jay24 thank goodness - if they didnt make it in your tank (which i know is pretty perfect) i just makes me feel better - thanks for your post!

i have 6 mantis but not a 1 in that tank - would never have them in there. i know what the popping sounds is and i am sure i dont have one in there. thanks for trying though

I plan on having a yellow tang and about 3 anthias. After reading this, I think Im going to add the anthias before the tang.
Maybe Ill just get chromis instead of anthias, so I wont have to worry about it lol

i have to have anthias - i have never had trouble with anything else dieing and i am going to find out why - after having the color i cant go back
