sudden Chrysurus angel death cause

Both a 3" chrysurs from divers den back in November. Healthy and growing for 10 months. Came back from short trip and he was AOL. Found part of remains yesterday. I used nearly 100% new LR to start tank so I don't think I have any nasties in tank. I did but a clean up crew that included emerald crabs but I can't imagine they would be big enough to catch a 4"+ angel. What can cause this type of sudden with no symptoms before. I also lost a smaller regal about 2 months ago same circumstances. What do you think, flukes?

So tank set up in January, and you got the fish back in November. Tank is 375 gallons?

Still, it was doing well then suddenly died with no apparent disease? Very unusual it seems. Normally if I get a fish past the 6 month mark it usually does well for a long time.

Fact of the matter is, sometimes fish die.

Sorry about the loss.

Sudden death due to an unrecognized medical condition is always a possibility. Even seemingly healthy humans keel over dead sometimes, so why would fish be immune to that?

Though an accident can't be ruled out either. You would be surprised what crazy ways some fish find to get themselves killed.

A sudden burst of violence can also never been ruled out. I've seen the most peaceful fish suddenly go berserk and attacking other unsuspecting fish.

Finally there is always also the possibility that you got a predator in your tank. I found large worms in tanks where they shouldn't have been by conventional wisdom.

Thanks all, The last fish I added was about 3 months ago at least. What is interesting is that both angels were fine once day and missing the next. I have fairly open rock work and I could not find them, I'm guessing they were wedged into a rock someplace or quickly consumed by hermits.
