Sudden shroom mass suicide today

OK, what happened?? A few days ago a nano with ONLY a large mushroom rock ( brn/reddish and green stripes shrooms) had a problem.

Nearly all the brownish mushroom, some pretty big, suddenly got real puffy (water?) in the stems. The water perms had been good and stable for months. Some detached and I removed those. I put an Eheim 2213 external filter with floss and a bag of carbon on and changed the floss etc in the tank's back. The grns seemed ok, low but just not expanding as much. So I did an early w/c of a gal or so. This afternoon the tank was quite cloudy and stank. I immediately did a 99% W/C with spare aged sw. I have to leave the wet sand in until I get some more sw, set up a temp holding tank and more sw so I can start all over with the rock. This should be done early this evening.

All I have done recently is trim a few of the brns to prop in another tank which I just started. That was over a week ago. I had checked all the stickies etc to remind me what to do.

So, any ideas folks??? I hate to lose the rock which is about 8" dia. Other than the sand w/ little critters in it and hermit and a couple of small snails thats all that is in the tank. Standard 50/50 compacts.

HELP !!!!!

My wife doesn't understand why the tank overhaul comes before staining and sealing the arch and ceiling trim.

Any ideas yet ????

I'm guessing a snail died prior to the mushroom inflation and is somewhere hidden in your tank or filtration system. That would account for the cloudy water and smell. There's nothing like the stank of a dead snail, and the biomass is enough to cause your symptoms. You also mentioned sealing the moldings, any chance of a poison in the tank or air? HTH

Dave, where those the mushrooms I sold ya?? If so that is the oddest thing I have even heard, I had put those through hell and back over the years and never had any issues.

But, if those were mine, once you get things straightened out I may have a smaller rock with some on there in my sump that I could give ya.

Man I wish mine would do that.

Sorry though, you obviously didn't want that. I can say that I seriously doubt a single snail death would cause this.

Did you test levels? Not just ammo and the Ns, but salinity, etc. Temp?

Toddrtrex; you are sure right.....Remember the shrooms I got from you? The first week one of the rocks was covered with white shrooms and I thought the cold got to them during transport and they all died off. But I kept it in the tank, and within a week they all bounced back and are now looking healthy and rich red!

The water tested fine prior.... when I found it going bad it was SO bad I didn't test, just got it all out. I cleaned and then quickly rinsed in RO/DI. Seems to be better, another 100% water change tonight probably.

Same rock Todd... seems better now. I'll see. Thanks.

Dave - see what happens when you joke around Saturday at the Shedd saying that you could kill anything you add to your tank??? Sorry about your losses!
